I use Epocrates a lot, and if you have a PalmOS it's free (in addition to your PDR). You can also spring for Epocrates Essentials which has a diagnosis guide in there, helps you find the diagnosis and tells you how to treat it.

Diagnosaurus is a good differential diagnosis guide that is free.

John's Hopkins Antibiotic guide will tell you the spectrum of antibiotics and you can even look it up by pathogen.

I also use Documents to Go because I can upload files on there and read them.

You can get Harrisons if you want or you can just use Up To Date (online service most hospitals have).

These are good enough to start. You can also put some games on there for when you want some down time ;) . As you go you'll find more things that are helpful or things that other people use

I also just recently found out about a program called Patient Keeper, which is good for patients who will be in long-term (you'll be able to figure it out after some experience who will stay). It stores all of the pt information you put in there, including labs, tests, etc.

Best of luck!

there's a great article on free or cheap programs for PDAs on mdconslut in the student section. i use lexi com drugs (subscription for updates), tabers, 5 min clinical consult, and patient tracker. there are also some free lab programs that are helpful.
