I was at an interview today for PCOM-Ga, and my interviewer (used to teach a St Matthews) told me that 12 new DO schools are planned to open across the US in the next couple of years. This is going to create a harder time for IMG's to obtain competitive residencies among other things. He told me that the whole Caribb med school system is unstable now, and to be careful in your decision making. Problems like funding for loans from the US, credibiltiy (St Chritopther's), and other problems are arising. Research the school you are going to and be cautious. He may have been biased since he taught at PCOM now, but there probably is some truth to what he said. I do know that there are a new number of DO schools opening up soon to keep up with the need of Physicians in the US.

I wouldn't worry about it too much........the fact that a lot of DO's don't enter the allopathic residency anyway helps and I think 12 seems a bit high..I've heard of 7 or 8 since they are such huge money makers. All it means is that you have to rock your usmle's a bit harder..but I don't think there is going to be like a huge residency shortage or anything....other things that are worth worrying about more than that.
