Hi there,
I was wondering what the probability of gaining clinical rotations in NY is if you are a SABA student. For personal reasons would like rotation in NY and am concerned since there are only around 3 NY hospitals that are affiliated.
Does anyone know how hard it is to get where u want? Particularly NY?
Thanks so much guys. :)

Hi there,
I was lucky enough to gain admission to SABA for September, 2006.

If ur board score is good u should be able to pick and choose ur rotations

Some of my classmates have done most of their rotations here. We have the ones that we are officially affiliated with and others you can work your way into.

so is the implication that it is easy to get NY?

I didn't say it was easy to get into NY. Not by any means. Doing well during your first two years and getting above a 200 on Step 1 will write your ticket - that and having a good rep (keeping in mind that everything you do on Saba gets found out and put in a file).
Best of luck,

pardon my ignorance, but how much is 200 roughly in terms of say percent, or percentile score. what is the average for saba students.

if you and your family live in ny it helps too. so a person that lives in ny or the vicinity will have a better chance of getting a clinical spot in ny than a person who is not from the area

I don't know the percentages exactly.
182 is passing. To do well as a foreign grad you should get at least a 200, at least that's what I've heard recommended. A 230 is approx 90%. Average score overall (not just for Saba) is ~216.
Best of luck,

Hi KurtaPyjama, The MCAT is a tame pussy cat next to the Steps. The USMLE is a very knowledge based test with time test stress. Best to scan and search the USMLE forums for more info on these tests.
It would take too long in this post to fill in the details.

first of all, those two digits are NOT percentiles or percentages. that being said, a 200 has a two digit score of 81.

ok fair enough.
so, is there not some rough approximation that can be used to obtain percentage or percentile scores from the step score?
thanks for the info and help!

Actually a 230 is a 93. My bad.
And, of course, that's not a percentage. My fault on that one too.
Don't worry about percentages. The mean a year ago was around 216. Just aim for a 220 and you'll be fine.
