My freind is convinced I should apply for transfer after first year at SABA to an american or canadian school. Does anyone know of someone who did this, schools that accept transfers, and whether or not his apporoach is worth it?

You apply after the end of your second year...that is, after you have a stellar USMLE score.

When I was on Saba I heard of students transferring out commonly to other Carribean schools especially near completion of their 3rd semester. Students trying to transfer out aftering completing 4th semester would get a Incomplete for Path I. As far as American school a few students did began the transfer process in their 4 th semester applying for 3rd year spots but they had stellar grads (all A's) I dont know about Canadian schools.

It is next to impossible for Canadian schools from what I have seen and it is possible for less than a handful of US schools but you usually have to be in the right state or have some sort of specific profile to have a great chance.

Most Medical schools in the states require that you must be enrolled in an LCME-accredited medical school and Must be American citizen. However, there are some schools that do not require this.
I will try to transfer as well.
All the best.

Generally, the higher the attrition rate, the more likely they will take a transfer student.

I found the following 2.
Vermont

Temple School of medicine(not sure about this)

Transferring is a highly unlikely event for foreign students. I read in JAMA about 50 or so pull it off each year. You must have:

1. No academic struggles; passing MCAT and USMLE scores, preferably over 200. A stellar all around package obviously helps you, ie, awards, comm service to go with good grades, MCAT and USMLE scores. Also need letters from profs and deans from Saba.
2. Luck. It is mostly based on attrition; are there open spots this year?
3. A state connection as mentioned before (ie, W.Va. and border states for Marshall; Wisconsin; Indiana)
4. Special circumstances/hardship by staying at current medial school (hard to explain if u plan on rotating in USA anyway). Buffalo and Mt. Sinai are examples of "hardship" schools.

AAMC has a search machine to check which schools have open spots:

http://services.aamc.org/tsp_reports/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.search_policy

I have almost completely ruled out the idea myself. I would lose a year if I go to Vermont--they require you to start 2nd yr over again as do some other schools, ie, NEOUCOM may also. I will also be almost a 4th yr by the time I start classes. Also, consider what you want to do eventually, ie, primary care (less competitive) vs. procedural (more competitive). Transferring may certainly help you get a more competitive residency, but you can do it from Saba also. Riz got surgery at Mayo this year!

Anyway, I have put some time and thought into this...if u want more info let me know.
