Guys I'm from Brooklyn, I just wanted to ask you...did you all have the option of D.O.? If so, why did you still choose SGU? Were there some who couldn't get into an American D.O. school? Thanks.

I've been accepted to SGU and am still waiting word from 4 U.S. M.D. schools and one D.O. school (NYCOM) If it comes down to SGU and the DO, should I be accepted to NYCOM, I would SGU. I applied to DO as a back-up. Honestly, I am not interested in learning Osteopathy. There's something intangible about going the traditional route and receiving my M.D. degree. In addition, SGU from what I have heard, is an exceptional institution - not that the DO schools aren't. It's apealing as well to have the opportunity to live abroad and work with people of a different culture. This can really put things in persepctive. The weather....85 degrees all year round...beautiful beaches...tropical. I love that stuff. Just my preference. I know some people don't put weight on location of the school and aesthetics, but once you move to a particular campus, I believe it does make a difference on your overall attitude. My collegiate campus was as nice as they come, as were the dorms - part of the reason I enjoyed college was because of the facilities and how nice it was.
All in all, it comes down to personal preference. Some people will argue that osteopathic grads get better residencies, and others will argue that SGU grads get better residencies. In my opinion, if you work your butt off and nail the USMLE's, you'll be fine. I'm an optomist, so I think anyone can succeed anywhere...if they want it bad enough.

I also applied to NYCOM (GPA: 3.5 MCAT: 29) and recently got in. It was a very hard choice but I decided that NYCOM would work better for me. I also wanted a change of scenary and a chance to move out, as well as some isolation from the daily distractions of friends/family. NYCOM will give me that, as I am planning to live in LI during my education there, yet be relatively close to home (Brooklyn). Thanks for the info Islander, I agree that between both of these respectable medical schools, all that really matters in the end is how much effort you put in. I was just curious what the thinking process of other people on the forum is regarding their decision.

I'm sure you'll be fine at NYCOM - if that's where you'll be happy receiving your med. education, then that's where you'll do better. Best of luck at NYCOM.
accidently reposted the same thing but I edited it
