This may seem like a non-essential question, but I thought I'd ask...I'm sure there are others whom are wondering the same thing...

What do most people do about their existing cell phone service in the states before they leave for the island...is there something that can be set up with the provider to keep the number so that when we come back on vacations we can still have the cell phone number and activated....I would like to keep my number so that when i'm in the states, people can still contact me, leave messages, and what not...

so to all those that have been on the island or are still on teh island, what did you do with that cell phone service, that you grew attached to, before you left for the island...??

tell them you're in the millitary, you're entering service and they'll hook you up- if you're a Canadian tho, this won't work.

Otherwise, for canadians who want to keep their number, you can pay like 10$ per month and go on "emergency only" service.
It's not cheap but if you love your phone number then maybe it's worth it to you. I actually just cancelled my cell phone.

i have verizon and they said you can suspend your account up to 6 months at a time, only paying a small fee a month
call your phone company and they will let you know what you can do, i dont think you have to give up your number to do this

I also have Verizon and will be suspending my phone as well during the semester. It's a $15 fee to suspend it.........you just call them up and tell them the date you want it suspended and when you want it turned back on. It's nice though because you can keep your account and your phone number. Hopefully your cell phone company provides this same service. Good Luck!

Nextel also provides a "Suspend" plan - for a $15 fee plus $5/month.

Do you know if you can suspend for 6 months per year or is it 6 months per request?
