Does anyone know how loans are released in regards to OSAP? Do we have to take the loan certificate with us to the island and get it signed at the financial aid office? or do we send it to the US office??

Help from anyone that has received osap while in SABA would be appreciated.

As far as I know, two of my buddies at Saba had their loan certificate signed at Saba and send them back to Canada via express post. One was from Nova Scotia and the other from Ontario. This happened last year and things may have changed.

I am currently at SGU and had my loan certificate signed by the main office in the States..

It's best to call Gardner for details.

You will only qualify for federal loans, not provincial ones and I believe that the papers are signed by Gardner. Call them to ask them.

I AM a canadian from ontario and here is the deal.

1. Saba is qulaified for OSAP. U must apply online immediately.
2. Once u get approved you will get a form sent to you and u must send that down to Gardner office, they will fill it out and return it to OSAP.
3 Once that is recieved and approved. you will recieve another form: confirmation of enrollment.
4. YOu must bring this down to saba with you and it is filled out by admins AT THE campus. This confirms you have started class.
5. You must then send this to OSAP offcie and your funds will be released.
6. You must reapply for each year of OSAP funding.

Yes I have been approved. Yes I have done all the paperwork. Except for confirmation of enrollment because I do not start until may.

Just completed and submitted OSAP app for my son who starts in Sep.. They indicated the Maximum is $210.00 / week. I assume, correct me if I'm wrong, that I / we should be applying for a 52 week period???

yes you apply for 52 weeks, and due to the new rules, OSAP no longer looks into patents income, its just the student income and the maximum youcan get is about 11000/year, let me know if anyone got more than this....lol......my second year loan is almost approved......

Hope this helps,

You can apply as soon as they open up the year slot on OSAP web site, i think the 2006-2007. Go to http://osap.gov.on.ca , and check out if the slot is open, you starting date has to start in that period of time. Well most often they start a new period 4 to 6 months in advance. If they have the period open then you can apply and get all the paper work done in advance, but the last two papers are only send once you have started your school and you get OSAP usually within 2nd month of your semester: that is if all your paper work has been recieved by OSAP.

Hope this helps,

thanks Siddman,

I owe them some money and since I start in Jan 07, they are saying that its going on interest and have to make one payment during this time. Is there any way around this?

Thanks.

I had the same problems, there are few problems that can arrise: either you owe NSLP (they are the ones who handle teh interest money and release of loans), so if you owe NSLP interest or any dues then you have to clear that and ask them to send your payment info to OSAP. In this case usually NSLP puts a hold on OSAP application. Second problem can arrise if OSAP have given you extra money in the peroid of time you attended school. They verify your income like after 3 or 4 years and if you income is over the one you showed they ask for that amount of money to be paid to NSLP, so that is another way your OSAP application can get on hold.

I am sorry, but there is no way out of this, you have to make the payments and then apply for the loans usually once you make the payments to NSLP they rectify the payment with OSAP within a week and your application can get processed.

Hope this helps,

I sure hope we can get CanHelp. Personally, I'm counting on it. That, OSAP, and a professional student line of credit via BMO Bank of Montreal. Does anyone know if that is too much debt for CanHelp?

What can I say? I'm poor...

Well its very easy actually and your question is not stupid, all you have to do is a year thingy, for example if you start in Jan 2007, you say your start date is Jan 01, 2007 and end date is Dec 31, 2007. always make sure its a year and always apply for 52 weeks. When you apply for the second year just apply Jan 2008 to dec 2008 and so on. You dont have to specify the semester, it goes by the year and Saba finiancial department understands this. Your program name is MD, "Medical Doctor". anyone will do. And the degree i think is the highest one, it think its Doctoral degree. Make sure you send this application where you differ your interest, otherwise even after you get OSAP they will still charge you interest.

Hope this helps,

With my experience can help are of no help, they are a pain for Canadian students. I will count more on goverment loans and Royal bank loans or BMO. Good luck

I was accepted for may 07 and when I applied for a loan I had no problem with National Bank in Montreal. They fully take charge of your expenses via a med school credit line. The whole thing was very fast, I recomend National Bank!
