i have 136 credits with a 2.95 GPA. 4 years of volunteer experience in a hospital, 4 very good recommendation letters 2 from science teachers, 1 from calculus and one from the admisnistrator at the hospital. I do not have MCATS. My personal statement is pretty good. ( I was told by a few of my professors and friends) I have also worked in a pediatric office and a denal office for approximately 4 years each. I don't know if it it matters but i have great finacial support from my parents.
Anyones input is very valuable. Many thanks in advance.:)

Apply immediately! Sounds like you would not have any problem getting into med school and if you stay consistent you'll be great!

Relax CSIMED,
SMU looks at the entire person, not just numbers. Send in application and prepare for an interview.
Good Luck!

Thank you very much for everyones input it has helped a lot. I have a few questions regarding the interview process to SMU. How long does the interview take? Does anyone know what questions they ask?
Another question about admission, if I apply today for september 06 do you think I will have a lot of competition during the month of April? Or does everyone wait untill the summer to apply???

I had a conference call and it lasted me about 10 minutes. The interviewer asked me some general questions and gave me a medical scenario (euthanasia in New Orleans during the Hurricane).
My advice: Be relaxed, confident, keep a copy of your personal statement and resume handy just incase the interviewer asks any questions pertaining to those items.
I believe you still have time to apply for the Sept 06 class. It may be getting more and more competitive so apply ASAP.
Good luck!

APPLY AS SOON AS Possible. There will be less seats available during the summer months.

on the school's forum, the admissions director, Dr. M, recently told someone as long as the application materials are to him by mid June they will be reviewed and have a chance at being admitted. You have enough time. Also, Dr. M told another person that he can make the grades you mentioned work if you have other positive attributes.
I'm sure you will do fine. Just take your time getting your stuff together, make sure you have everything you need and send it out. I had to push my application back to Aug 06, so I'm waiting, too. Just be yourself and if you've done the best you can, you won't have anything to worry about.
Good luck.:D

Yes. Why not try? I'm sure you can do well. Undergrad grades don't mean squat. It amuses me to no end to hear people talk about their degrees and prep work, and then I outscore them. Nonsense. By the same token though, I get outscored by people with degrees and without degrees. The degree stuff is a bunch of hype. I have always felt it is **, and now I know it is! If you want to be a doctor, study medicine. The end!:D

very true... grades, GPA, MCAT, none of it matters, but only when the person who realizes this has the heart to prove the statement. For those that don't have the will and the heart to be a physician and study everyday while in school...thats when they better hope their GPA and MCAT were really good so they can make the USMLE magic happen...

Its all about motivation and desire. If you have those traits you will be well on your way (a few brain cells doesnt hurt either)

There is no assurance of licensure from any offshore school. Even Ross had students in limbo a couple of years ago and had to endure a lengthy re-evaluation process in Texas. These laws change all the time. It has less to do with quality of education and has more to do with money and who in your school admin has a freind of a freind that is on a state board. Sad but true.

You won't have any problem getting in; the hard part is staying in and making it through.

getting in is not gauranteed, however it is not that difficult considering ur experience.
they WILL be upping their requirements, to weed out those who breeze in - so make sure your essay shows you want it & will do it, and reverify that in your interview! The earlier you apply, the better!
once you get in, it's all up to you how well you do!
u should have no problems, just don't take it to be so easy, & we'll see you down there!
PS - only 2LORs are required, but more won't hurt.

I am due to graduate in december. The only pre reqs i lack are Org. chem 1 and 2 (which i am taking in the summer and fall). My overall gpa is a 2.8, but i have worked for the anesthesia department at the university hospital pretty much the entire time i have been in college to pay for it(even had to take a semester off to save $). I have several letters of recommendation from surgeons and anesthesiologists. My dream is to be an anesthesiologist, i found out about caribbean schools from one of the anesthesiologists i work for who actually attended AUC back in the 80's....anyways, i know you guys cant give me a yes or no answer, but are my stats comparable to those admitted to SMU?,if you had to guess, do you think i will be able to get in the january class? I plan on applying at the end of the summer......thanks everyone

All of that sounds good, but what is your science gpa? SMU will look at that, too.

I lack the chemistries and physics but I am taking those this fall/winter and will finish in the spring....I wanted to apply now for next spring so hopefully they are able to provide me a provisional acceptance for May 2007....whats your take on this??? good chances? so-so chances?

Don't worry! I will be retaking Orgo I and II (C's) as well as Chem I and II (D's) over again. Just study really hard for it and plus it should be fairly easy the second time you take it because you know what to be expected. Study hard and let's get A's together.

I currently applied to SMU and wanted to know what are my chances of getting in. I have overall 2.924 GPA, 4 years volunteer experience in a hospital, 4 LOR's. I have worked in Medical and Dental offices for about 3-4 years each. I think I have a pretty strong personal statement (thats what my friends and family tell me). One down side to my application is that i have one D in organic chemistry 2.
Any imput will be valuable.

Have you taken the MCAT?
Lately SMU seems to be shying away from students below 3.0 although you are very close and appear to have a strong resume. Id bet you'd get in with your grades... best of luck

Your hospital experience will help your borderline GPA being as close as it is to 3.0. If you interview, that may be the deciding factor.
Viel Glück!

Getting a "D" in one of the pre-med courses may have to be remediated. If they ask you to remediate it, ask if you can take a biochem course. That will be much more predictive than Orgo 2, and will be more applicable to what you will see in med school.
