I am coming out to visit the campus May 6 - 12 with my girl and get fimilar with everything. I know that is smack during exams then everyone leaves (1 termers I think) but if there are any students left that I could meet that would be great. I have to let Bayshore know I am coming.
Um where is the cheapest/safest place to stay ??GA hotel?? Are there any discounts for students.
I hope to:
Open a bank account
Take a tour of campus
Check out cell phone options
Figure out where food markets are and places to hang
Basically anything that will alleviate things to do come Aug. any other suggestions would be great.
Of course check out the beach.
Thanks guys/gals

To open a bank account, you need a passport, letter of acceptance and a drivers license; i think you may need the student ID as well, so you might not be able to open an account, but you should be able to do the rest of the things, besides different terms have their exams at different times

Of the options listed, True Blue Bay is nicest, followed by Grand Beach Resort. TBB is 10-15 minutes walking to campus, and both are 3-5 minutes to a school bus stop. (Though if you take a bus from the closest bus stop to TBB people will look at you funny.)
The Rex Grenadian (http://www.rexresorts.com/_caribbean/_grenada/index.html) used to give a student discount pre-Ivan (not sure if now) - $70US/night for a hillside room, but it's not on the school bus route.
Oh and don't buy a cell phone now -- the major companies will be on campus during orientation week offering 50% discounts.

I would also go with True Blue Bay resort-they have student discounts. Bank you have to wait and as mentioned the phone companies will come to campus. Check out spiceland mall for a nice food shop and definitly go the fruit smoothie place in the mall-delicious!
My favorite beaches are Grand Anse Beach and Aquarium beach.
have fun!

I'd also suggest waiting for a phone until you come down.
And stay somewhere on the bus route unless you were planning on renting a car. The Rex is nice, but not on the route. I'd suggest Grand Beach as it's close to a grocery store, pharmacy, etc. Or True Blue Bay as it's also close to school and a short bus ride to the afore-mentioned amenities. The big drawback of TBB is that you're not on the beach but again, a short bus ride will take care of that. If I were coming to the Caribbean though, I know I'd want to be on the beach for early morning swimming and stuff.
Definitely tour the campus and check out the facilities and dorms if possible. 4th term is in exam week that week or I'd offer to show you around.
I know you said you were going to check out the food places. My suggestion is to make a thorough examination of such and see what's available. There might be something you really want that you find you can't get here or is REALLY expensive. Both of those are possible.

Thanks everyone. Really is much appreciated. I was really hoping on the bank account thing as I here that can take a day in and of itself come Aug. I have everything except the ID. Mybe I can photoshop one together :) just kidding.

I was able to open a bank account early at RBTT- just needed the passport Driver's License and letter of acceptance(that is KEY - they won't open anything without it). Its a good idea- that way the atm card is just waiting for you at the school branch at the beginning of the term and you don't end up waiting 4-5 weeks to get the card.
In Vinnies, Scotiabank has a partnership with BofA- you can use your atm card there without any charges- you might want to check if the one in GND does the same.
Agree about the phone thing- they have good deals that 1st week of school- or you can bring an unlocked phone(at least tri-band) from home.

Allamanda used to offer cheap rates - although i don't know if that's seasonal (and there is a discount for students - they'll probably give it to you since you're a 'prospect')
(it's definitely not as posh as Rex - but I don't know how much time you'll be spending in your room)
you may also want to check Coyaba - since they reopened - they may be offering a promo price (though I'm not certain)
it's on grand anse beach; across the street from spiceland mall and marquis plaza. also within a hop, skip, and a jump from grand anse campus (from which you can get a bus to campus).
if you want their number you can do a google for their website. or pm me and I'll check it for you.
Cheers,
