Hi,
I just wanted to know how the USMLE score is calculated? What is considered excellent score? what is not? What is the USMLE step1 out of?

How do you know if you have 90% or 99% or 80%?

the higher the score the better. Step 1 avg is usually around 217. DOnt know what 2 digit score that is anymore

75 or 182 = min pass.

No one knows how step 1 is graded, no one knows how many questions you need to get right to get a certain score. if someone claims it, they're lying.

most programs use different cutoffs for downloading applications.

Some programs might require a 95 2 digit score, or some will require a miin 85, or some will require a 75 and a pass on a first try.

Depends on what speciality you want to go into and which institution you're applying to.

Its not the answer you want, but you're gonna be searching for a long time to find that kind of answer and won't find it. Many have tried.

what is the meaning of the 2 digit score? and the 3 digit score? what do they represent? what is their significance? are the two scores related or not? which one is more important?

it's a big fat curve, and it's top secret.
so your score depends on how other test takers do

why is it secret?

It is a mathematical formula that considers many variables including how others have done of the same questions so it is complicated, not secret.

The precise forumla is not released, the NBME considers it proprietary.

I wouldnt worry about how its scored.
