First semester is getting your study routine down. Don't take anything with you that you might use to waste time. IE TV's playstations Nintendo's Xboxes, for the first two semesters. After the first two semesters you can pretty much tell where you stand in terms of class rank. How much buffer you have underneath you. Then you can kind of ease up a bit.
I always put just enough effort not to be on the bottom 25% of the class, I tried to understand the fundamentals of the subject for the USMLE more so then for the ROSS class. Believe me when I was there the two were not the same, and effort was being made to make the ROSS classes more of a board prep type courses.
When you take away distractions, you find that after classes you can pretty much put in a minimum of 5 hrs each day for studying if not more. I usually didn't attend class if I could get away with it. And studied till I got tired and partied or explored the island.

Attendance are really important but I know many medical student who study by themselves by reading books and using PPT! So at the end it matter how much you know.
