If they fail, they deserve it. Its that easy. Don't feel bad for them. Its not the school's fault, its not the professor's fault. Ask the people that are passing how they did indeed pass...all of them will say they studied.

gohornsgo... thanks for the insight .... however, I am interested in knowing the percentage of each class mentioned above ... let's not bashing any one who is doing bad... specially the 2nd semester people, who got repeatedly f**** by some teacher and the administration.
Even I am in the save side of the statistics, but I feel bad for my collegues and I'm trying to get some info for them.

I agree with goho...I have maxed out my 80% on micro, path1 and psych. I am not worried about the shelf, though I will give it my best shot.
Although I do care about my peers, I worry about myself first. Makes nosense to "wonder" who is getting skrew over...other wise you be part of the statistic.

I think a lot of people who were close dropped the class. However I am willing to bet there are some riding the line who will be surprised to see the shelf is not much like our class exams. Make sure you know BRS and Kaplan cold!!!

As a recent SMU grad and a matched (thank god) psychiatry candidate, I can tell you these shelf exams are only there for your benefit.
Sure it makes things harder, sure it means you need to get higher grades on the exams throughout the semester, and it means you need to have a constant overall picture of what you have learned so far.
When I was in basic science we didn't have these exams, the exams were written by the professors. And let me tell you, if I was exposed to USMLE style questions all through basic science I would have had an easier time on step 1. Step 1, for some of you is not something to worry about now. But you should worry about it, you should review what you have learned. Step 1 was the hardest exam I have ever taken. And once I passed it was easy in hindesight to see how much easier it WOULD have been if we were better prepared for it.
If you do not do well and don't study for these shelf exams, or you think the shelf exams are worth too much, you will be sorry when you are sitting in the exam center for the third time taking step 1 while everyone else is doing clinicals and can study for step 2.
It's worth it, believe me.

Excellent information.
Bottom line: study for knowledge and for the future NOT to pass a class. Try to understand what your learning and things will be far easier down the road.

Who exactly would have this type of information? But in relation to your immediate circle of "colleagues", just do some basic math. The first 3 exams count for 80% of our total grade. Therefore, just to be on the safe side, you need at least 60% of your grade going into the shelf. This is approximately a high C/ low B average based on 3 exams.

I'm guessing that the shelf exam is a super hard exam? Is it closely related to the USMLE??

The shelf was a hard exam at first, but it is getting easier every day. The shelf is supposedly the closest thing to the USMLE because it is retired questions of the USMLE. Well, with the PASS Program, the questions are getting easier and easier everyday. "Click and move!" Have a nice day!!:D
