When signing up for Vonage, do I need to pick a US phone number? I am confused on how it works when you bring the vonage box to the caymans. What do you guys do as far as Vonage? Also, what about a 1-800 number? Is it beneficial to get one of these? thanks....

I have been using Lingo more than a year without any problems. It is $34 including free phone call to asia, canada and UK. I guess you could pick any number but not 800.

Not in GC but in the states! Anybody has been using this Lingo in GC?

From what I hear Vonage works good on GC. You should choose a number that is on you area code. That way when someone calls your vonage number from the US or Canada it is like they are just calling down the street and there will be no long distance charge. It is called a virtual number. So if you are listed on vonage as a 717 area code then no matter where you actually recieve the call it still only "sees" the call as if you were answering in 717 area code. Anyone from that area code can call you in GC free as long as 717 is not long distance for them. Also if you are a vonage subscriber you can call anywhere in the US or Canada from GC for free. Soooooo pick an area code that you plan on recieving most of your calls from. Just sign up and bring your Vonage box to the island with you and plug it in to your modem and phone line. If you move, just take it with you and plug it in at your new place. Wow vonage should be paying me for this. I have vonage in the states and it works great. In fact sometimes better than a regular phone line. hope this helps.

Vonage $24.99
Lingo $19.95

Also Lingo has international plan. $29.95 for unlimited phone call to Mexico. $34.95 to Asia.

I know that a lot of students use Vonage in Grand Cayman. If Lingo is available in GC, you guys could save some money. :)

thanks for all the info! I looked into Lingo, unfortunately it is not available yet in my hometown in the states. but Vonage looks great. So, just to be clear before i sign up, I get a phone number from my hometown in the states and i can use it in grand cayman? what do you guys do for local calls though? cell phone?

Also, can you get a virtual phone number with the cayman islands area code for local incoming calls? thanks

Yes you can get another area code and phone number for GC local calls but it is 24.95/line/month. So two lines will cost you around 50.00/month

How do you get vonage? Do you pick up the box in a store?

Go to www.vonage.com (http://www.vonage.com) and sign up. You can either do it online or via phone.

I signed up online, but i believe you can purchase the router at Best Buy also. I looked up the area code for Grand Cayman and it said it was not available. So i guess i will just be using Vonage for calls to the states and will have to get a cell phone for local cayman calls....

vonage works well, we have had problem with the Lingo once before, but i believe it is settled now.
Whatever IP phone you are bringing, just make sure you do not plug it in without reading the IT spreadsheet given to you at the front desk. :)

there are cheaper ways, like skype.com and someone mentioned that yahoo has voip too. both about $30 a year for phone number and all incoming are free for you and would cost person back home same as calling anyone in the US.
should check that out first before getting into any contract. much cheaper than the $15-25 for vonage

You can usually get Vonage boxes at Best Buy that are free (after rebates). Otherwise, you can get a Vonage-box-&-router-in-1 at Best Buy. . . I'm thinking that's about $50, but you'll have to check. They have sales sometimes too (e.g., get a Best Buy gift card when you purchase it).
