i want to apply to SMU for either the upcoming semester or sept. I come from a medschool that is having a lot of problems with govt organizations such as GMC and ECFMG. Basically I want to start over fresh elsewhere.
Can anyone please tell me what are the chances anything bad like that would happen to SMU where the school is under threat of being shut down? I am also looking to apply other places, but I put SMU on top of my list as the island is very good. So are there any known issues or any threatening issues where I might not do good on the boards or ultimately stop me from becoming a physician?
Thanks in advance

rickrajat,There appears to be no unforseen danger in attending SMU. As far as I know, it's safe. That being said, I wouldn't be attending SMU if it was not a safe university.

the "known issue" that you would have to deal with is the consequences of formal cali disapproval, (whether warranted or not) and any potential licensing issues that may or may not arise from that in the future in other states in addition to cali

...which has never been brought up before...

its a prospective transfer student asking a very specific question, and thats the specific answer, unfortunately (or rather fortunately) there are no other known issues with respect to future licensing (in my opinion) that one needs to be aware of before transferring to smu.. else they should be listed too... but this is a very important and significant issue, esp in todays climate and the way state medical boards are responding to IMGs, i think its really irresponsible to just leave it at "there are no unforseen dangers" .. since thats not an entirely true statement... nothing wrong with being candid, in fact its to ones own benefit, everyone should be fully aware of what they are getting into so that they can be ready for future hurdles.. if there is one thing thats served me well through med school, and now residency, its being aware of all the potential pitfalls and difficulties facing me, much easier to overcome hurdles if you know about them going into the game...

No problem or danger at SMU at all...
The NY state board visit went soooo well... they were actually heard
telling students how good and advanced their school (SMU) is.
The ACCM is on campus these days... and the school is the pride
of Cayman Islands.
Cayman is one of the biggest financial hubs in the world and the government here is keen on education, and they want to foster
the relationship with the Georgetown hospital (as advanced as US hosp.)
and make it a teaching hospital.
Its better to start over rather than transfer among caribbean schools
because you might face problems and might need LOR's from every
professor who taught you due to state requirements.
I never blindly encourage people to come to SMU... my peers are making
great strides to make SMU's name known...
so if you are committed to success, not mediocrity,,,then please do apply.

It could be possible but that is very little possibility. Several of my collegues got state license already. None of them have any problems so far as SMU graduates.

im not saying it definately will or will not be a problem..
what im advocating is know everything before u go into it and accept it ..
recognize it could be a "potential" problem.. could not be a problem.. and ppl with state licenses already, did they get them before or after disapproval.. those are questions individuals need to check for themselves in advance.. im suggesting that its not in anyones best interest to underplay issues or ignore them or deny reality.. thats all.. not more nothing less.. be well informed.. dont wear rose colored glasses, be prepared for unexpected situations.. know everything u possibly can.. its not an issue anyone needs to get defensive about..

I agree. That would help cut down on multiple posts and revisiting tired old topics that can be found multiple times on this site alone.

We're all aware of that. I believe that SMU will get Cali approved soon within 1-3 yrs. If there is a problem to get medical licenses, it could be a problem only who applies permanent license at this time before Cali approved, like me or my previous classmates because currently SMU is disapproved in CA. But there will be no problem at all for the current basic science students and newbies when they apply permanent state licenses approximately 5-8 yrs later, the time SMU get CA approved.

For states with potential problems for licensure for SMU grads, look at the "50 states" sticky on the SMU clinical forum. Five students contacted all the state medical boards last year, and any state medical board that informed us of any potential problems was listed so far. Now things can change since we last contacted each individual state medical board.
If you are planning to practice at anyone of these states, just be aware of the issue. If you still plan on attending SMU, well atleast you was informed. If you don't have a problem with not being able to practice in Cali for ever, or do not plan on practicing at a state that uses the Cali list, then you should be fine. Remember NY & FL have approved SMU.
