If you do a residency in something like ortho or neurosurg that is an integrated surgical residency (you don't have to do a general surgery residency first and then a fellowship), are you still considered to have been trained in general surgery?
For example, is any fellowship that requires a general surgery residency first, also open to orthopaedic surgeons?

No. You have to be board eligible in GS before you can do a fellowship such as CT or colorectal.
Ortho will qualify you for spine, hand, etc.

Likewise, if you are in a program that requires some time in general surgery before switching over (for example, categorial PRS requires 3 years of GS before going to PRS), you are not eligible to take the GS specialty boards and technically cannot practice GS or apply for any GS fellowships.
