You can always apply to whatever program you wish, whether or not you have an EAD. However, realistically since you won't require a visa you will be eligible for those programs that do not sponsor J1 or H1B. The bad news is that even with an EAD you are still an IMG, and competitive programs (radio, derm and ortho) may not consider you.

thanks very much for the reply.
so you dont want me to apply for these programs(radiology, ortho etc) at all or do you want me to just give it a try.
so does it mean there is no advantage of having a green card in getting into residency.
and how long will it take to get the EAD.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP.

It depends on what stage you are in with your sponsorship. If the initial paperwork was filed and approved, then you move on to part 2 of the sponsorship phase. Phase 2, you begin to adjust you status, at this point you can apply for you EAD. It will take 4-6 months to get this. It last for 1 year, so every six months or so you will have to reapply for it. With and EAD you're golden. You can apply to any program because you won't need a visa.

Several programs are looking at different things. The fact that you do not need visa is one advantage. If your boards 1&2 scores are above 90, apply to any program of your choice. Do not limit yourself by that IMG syndrome. After all most students from US schools do not perform as good as some IMGs (cream of the crop). Please take a chance with as many programs as you can afford to appear for interviews and rank which ever you find interesting.

Most of the programs in the northeast I've heard are IMG friendly

With an EAD you should not have any problems because you are allowed to work, so feel free to apply to any residency program you like because nothing is limiting you. The EAD comes in handy because you won't need an H1B or a J1 visa, which gives you an advantage over your non EAD holding counterparts.
