What would happen to practicing IMG physicians if their prospective medical school closed after this person completes a residency and is licensed in a state?

As a matter of fact, are there any St. Chris graduates out there practicing after residency that are out of a job permenantly if St. Chris closed down (looking more and more likely)?

Two things... once you are licensed in a state, you don't have to verify your education every time you re-cert. In most states, this is an online process and mostly a matter of declaring any sanctions placed on you and paying a fee. The closure could, however, be a HUGE problem if you are not yet licensed.

The other is, we should ALL use the FSMB CVS service. You pay for it, but it is a bank with all of your info in it that can be used in the future. Given the nature of our schools, I really don't think we should wager that they will be around in 20 years when you want to move the wife and kids to Montanna...... You can use the CVS and have that verified material forwarded to the board you need.

Please give out a link and more info on the CVS service. Also what about people in residency when and if their school closed could they complete the residency? Does the educational license count if your school closed?

FCVS's link:
http://www.fsmb.org/fcvs.html

Not all states accept FCVS's file. Many states still want trascripts and such in addition to what FCVS provides (which is redundent, but you know how they are). But, most states have provisions for those graduates whose schools have closed... and may take FCVS's file as prima facie evidence of your education.

As for those who are in residency (and have not yet applied for licensure) -- I would advice starting FCVS profile ASAP. They should be able to finish residency. If the school closed before the grads were able to set up a FCVS profile -- they are probably out of luck.

I think that might be state to state, but I believe they'll be ok in the short term because they are renewing the residency training permit. There is a St. Chris Surgical resident at Atlanta Medical Center who is still working. I think the major poo poo storm will come when they go to apply for the unrestricted license in one of the "green-book" states. Plus, if your school is discredited, you're not looking too good from the boards' standpoint. I feel really sorry for the good docs from SC. We need to keep in mind that this could have happened to any of us.

What's a "green-book" state?

What's a "green-book" state?

The term refers to one of the 20 or so states which evaluate the affiliation of your clerkships with either a US medical school or with an ACGME approved residency program. You can find a list in this forum, though the information changes and you should look into each state.

my husband did his md from grace and is now finishing residency in acgme accreditted residency program. his fcvs packet is ready but we just found out grace univ does not exist any more. to further compound this problem, i have matched at a texas residency program which does not approve any carrib schools dead or alive. what would be the best course of action? anyone else from grace univ. facing the same problem?

Not a whole lot you can do about Texas with a degree from Grace. Not all Caribbean schools are unacceptable to TX. Ross is approved by Texas, SGU grads are treated case-by-case, but it's mostly formality. But, outside of the established Carib schools, TX is impossible -- and not a whole lot you can do about it. If your husband wishes to accompany you to TX, he is unlikely to be able to work as a physician in TX.

As for FCVS -- hopefully everything your husband needs from Grace has already been submitted before Grace closed. If not, I don't think there is any solution to it. Call FCVS, but it's likely that his profile will go unverified if he still needs anything from Grace.
