Hi there,
This question is for any upper semester student(s) who has already taken a shelf exam @ SMU.
What should I/we (first semester) students do to prepare ourselves for this test. Would BRS suffice? Kaplan?
I don't understand why the administration made this 20% of our grade. This is horrible and on top of this, i don't even know how to study for it. Where can i find some sample questions?

If you can not pass the NMBE subject shelf right after taking the class you should not pass the course. The NBME is the best objective measure of your knowledge. If you're not good enough it's best you find out early, rather than spend 100K in basic science and fail step 1.
BRS is not good enough, Kaplan is OK, but the text book is best.

Kaplan videos and books if you can afford the time. Otherwise First aid and BRS anatomy.

This is some piss poor advice. Lots of people don't pass the shelf, in fact most seem not to. If you fail the shelf don't worry about it, just work harder.

i think they are talking about individual subject shelf exams, not the cumulative one

Yes, they are now the individual subject shelf exams. I can only speak for my current semester but I am sure it would apply for all the semesters. It is no longer the comprehensive shelf. For anatomy, BRS should be fine. Also look at Kaplan and first aid. Its 20% this semester and I heard its going up to 30% next semester.

HeyMcfly I can see why you have trouble with the shelf you can not read. Please take the time to read the post before forming an opinion. It clearly says SUBJECT exam.
I stand by my comments if you can not pass the SUBJECT exam right after taking the course you should not be passing the class. If you don't know the material right after being taught life will not get easier after 5th semester.
The shelf is a pain in the @#$ but it isthe best way to gauge your preformance

Has anyone taken the anatomy shelf exam? Do you have any advice?
Thanks.
