I would never consider Russian medical schools, from the experiences I've heard from here and my Nepalese neighbor's aunt who went. She graduated there just fine, but she was far, far, from capable of sitting for the USMLEs.
If you guys are thinking Russia, why not China? There are plenty of them that have English medical programs, and are WHO-listed and whatnot. China Medical University in Shenyang has had an English program since the 1970s, almost as old as SGU...

My friend's family (and thus is aunt) is from Nepal. I'm sorry, I don't know much about Nepalese medical schools. However, I do know that the country right now is rather unstable, in a struggle between the royal authorities and the Communists...

Mikhail, am i right in saying that some of the above institutions are 'under investigation' by the GMC-UK? I am pretty sure they are, and if this is correct, none of the russian schools would be a good bet at the moment.

though it really aches to recapitulate past events yet i am scribbling few points here as asked by you.
as i have been a student at RSMU, i got pally with few students there who i am in constant contact with.one of them was beaten up by skinheads 4 days ago from now.foreigner's hostel, at ulitza volgina, is ablaze with such incidents. 4 murders so far i know of , several skinhead attacks.being a girl and fair skinned, i had no problems there but my darker pals had problems.girls are respected there but non-russian boys are taken to task.by 'taking to task' i mean to stress the "russia is only for russian" thinking of skinheads.latest incidents include, one malaysian student beaten by skinheads, his skin around eye orbits was ripped.another one had a senior student of indian origin being beaten.both of them had to be hospitalised.the best way to avoid such incident is to keep company of a girl preferrably a fair one cuz girls being raped and hit is also common among darker counterparts.don't be surprised if you are suggested to bleach your hair blonde (incase you're fair so that you look russian).be well dressed to mingle in crowd.my friend was pushed to fall who was non-russian.so girls are also not safe but much better off than boys.
by saying all this, i don't intend to scandalise the whole scenario.it's all upto you to lend ears to suggestions and advice and draft your own strategy.
since you're a malaysian, you'll have an advantage of groups malaysians roam in (which i seriously loathed cuz they won't entertain any non-malaysian  )moreover, there is a serious bias against russian med schools at many places.being a malaysian and studying med in russia seems coherent because your govt has some tie-ups with russia in educational exchanges.so you're better of thinking this.i came back because i was highly buggered by bribery, corruption, poor studies ,hostels etc.it JUST didn't appeal to me.anyways, again it's just me saying this.have your own take .
best of luck

Hey Orphan. Thanks for always answering questions about Russia/RSMU. I may have more in the future if you don't mind. Good luck with wherever you choose.
Does anyone (Mikhail?) know if all the media attention on certain Russians' attitudes toward foreigners has had an impact on application #'s from foreigners? Not slagging Russian schools at all just curious.
Here is a recent example of the coverage I mentioned:
FEATURE-Foreigners live in fear of Russian skinheads
By Oliver Bullough
MOSCOW, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Russia's small Cameroonian community was shocked and saddened, but not surprised, when fellow citizen Kanhem Leon was murdered by racists. They know the danger of violence is ever present.
***** Samba Samba, the Cameroon embassy's second secretary, says he always advises new arrivals not to walk around on their own and to avoid places where skinheads hunt foreigners.
"When people came here to study in communist times, it was not like this. But now people are poor and drunk. Maybe they are not happy and they attack our lads on the street," he said.
A series of random racist murders, like that of 28-year-old Leon late last year and other foreign students in Moscow and elsewhere, have forced the issue into the headlines.
Last month, a man shouting "Heil Hitler" wounded eight people in a knife attack on a Moscow synagogue, and attacks on immigrants are so common that they rarely make the press.
President Vladimir Putin has responded by calling racism an "infection" and ordered police to take steps to crush it. But experts say its roots are deep in demoralised post-Soviet society and will not be easy to pull out.
The skinheads, they say, are like a mixture of neo-Nazis and soccer hooligans grafted onto the casual racism that the Soviet Union concealed under its communist rhetoric.
"Our ideology is racism above all. We don't like Tajiks, Armenians, Jews -- we don't like anyone of a different race," said one self-declared skinhead in an interview with Reuters.
MACHETE
The man calls himself Tesak (machete) -- "because I like knives" -- and wears big black boots and a short, padded jacket.
"At the moment in Russia we're not very organised, there is no single leader. We just have groups of five or 10 people who go out to kill Armenians, Chinese, Tajiks," he said.
His group Format 18 -- the numbers one and eight represent the initials of Adolf Hitler -- posts videos of its attacks on its Web site. One clip shows a group of young, muscular men in their uniform of jeans and boots beating a Tajik trader in a market before it ends with the slogan of "White Power".
Most Russians strongly disapprove of such assaults, but opinion polls suggest passive racism is widespread.
Foreign visitors to Russia are often shocked by casual racist language and behaviour that has long been taboo in their own societies.
Late last year, polling firm Levada Centre said 53 percent of 1,600 respondents supported the phrase "Russia for the Russians", while the numbers supporting a limit on immigration were markedly higher than the year before.
Some political groups have flirted with racism, and the Rodina (Motherland) party was barred from Moscow elections last year for a campaign advertisement that said "let's clean the city of rubbish" over pictures of immigrants from the Caucasus.
A demonstration organised by the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI) in November saw around 5,000 marching under banners of "Russia for the Russians" and "Russia, forwards".
Protests arranged by pro-Western liberals would be lucky to attract a tenth of that number.
"We have lived here for thousands of years, and why should we share what is ours with people who have only just arrived," said DPNI spokesman Alexander Belov.
"White migration has always brought progress, but you can not call what is happening now progress -- millions of immigrants from Tajikistan or China who have never even held electric tools do not bring progress."
FORMER MASTER
There are no precise figures for the level of immigration into Russia. But millions of people from the impoverished ex-Soviet states have moved here in search of work.
Tajiks, Uzbeks, Armenians and Azeris are often highly visible since they work as taxi drivers or in markets.
Many young Africans and Asians come to study in Russian universities, which offer a high-quality education relatively cheaply. Moscow was a major centre for students from the developing world during communist years, when the Soviet Union used free education to win friends and influence.
Economists say immigration is necessary to offset the decline in Russia's population, which is falling by around 750,000 a year, but experts say there is no sign ethnic Russians are getting any happier about it.
Tesak's shaved head and clothes makes him look like an extremist on society's fringe, but he is a qualified engineer and not as easily sidelined as drunken soccer hooligans.
"Tesak is the future of the skinhead movement. He is clever and confident, he doesn't take drugs or drink. You can only kill him, you can never make him abandon his ideas," said Sergei Belikov, a lawyer who works with skinheads and has written three books on the phenomenon.
"This is becoming a middle class movement ... It has become a national idea when nothing else is left. Teachers have become market traders, doctors have become bums, but they can all say at least they are white and European."
Parliament promises new laws that would, among other things, make Web sites like Tesak's illegal. But Cameroon's Samba Samba said there was a lack of will to really crack down.
"We do not think the government is doing enough. If someone is killed, the culprit must be found and convicted ... they have still not found (Leon's) killers and this is sad. If they wanted to find them, they could do it in two days," he said.
Until more of an effort is made, Belikov said even the precautions Cameroon urges on its citizens are not enough.
"Basically, I would advise Africans and Asians not to come to Russia, there is nothing good for them here," he said.

You are absolutly correct Orph. ;)

On what basis did they rank the schools?
They take into consideration several indicators: qualification of staff, number of students, number of international students, students/professor ratio, research activities, publishing activity, hostels provided, hospitals, etc. So, the rank does not necessarily correlate with a qualification of international students managers, but demonstrates general level of the school’ development

Yes, there is an investigation of relationships an illegal medical school in UK reported to have with three Russian med unis located in St Petersburg. However, it is not the fault of Russian med schools.
Also, LONGMAN dictionary of contemporary English: an official attempt to find out the reasons of something such as crime, accident, or scientific problem.
So, investigation is not = sentence or punishment. Please, stop your attacks on these schools.
AND… specially for you:
Dear Mr Grafov
Thank you for your email of 11 April 2006 about medical schools in St Petersburg.
If a doctor has a qualification from one of the medical schools in St Petersburg, they will need to provide us with a letter, on official paper, from the university or medical college confirming that they were resident in St Petersburg for the duration of their training. They will also need to provide details of any periods of training away from St Petersburg. We will then be able to consider their application.
I understand that this situation seems to have been brought about by private UK medical schools. However, we must be sure that all doctors who are on the register are fit to practice in the UK. We have brought in these extra security measures to ensure that we protect patients.
I hope that my response has been helpful. If I can help in any other way, please contact me.
Yours sincerely

4 murders so far i know of
Do you mean that happened recently in Moscow? I did not hear about murders here during last years. May I ask you about the students’ universities and (approximate) dates the murders happened?

If you have your own experience, I guess its good to mention name of the school, otherwise it looks like incorrect summary

Im currently typing this from RSMU hostel..I'm currently studying here in Moscow in RSMU..Orphan, you mentioned earlier that a Malaysian guy was beaten up by Russians..He was my best friend and I went with him to get help til he was taken by the ambulance. I have the pictures if u want them..regarding the murders..it was reported in Malaysian newpapers and even russian newspapers Pravda. Google up pravda and search for their archieves..Regarding bribery? students often are directly asked for bribe. enough said. of course. we are students. i don't mind the hostels..the uni condition as long as they give me sufficient education. we take things into our own hands.. because the amount of money we are paying here.. is FOR EDUCATION..not the maintanance of the toilet or whatsoever... and Mikhail..to mention the names of students...uni etc...you tryin to trip ppl and then use their words to sue them in court? ...ooooooooooooooooooo ....and anyways...if you are looking at russia.. come to study...and make ur own changes here...
