Yea, I just thought whatever I do now will help at least a little bit.

Okay so, there is no break between 1st and 2nd years, thats fine.

So, you finish Gross Anatomy in the first semester?

Also, I read on this board that the Basic Sciences is Semesters 1-5

and in the 5th semester, you take the Kaplan Review Course, I looked at the AUC website and it didn't exactly make it clear. It lists a few courses then Shelf Exams, Preceptorship.

Sorry for the annoying questions.

Actually, I've talked to other med. students in the Caribbean and in the US who did the same and weren't "lost confused and scared." Just wanted an opinion, you dont have to be an a**hole

Actually, if you're willing to work hard in your classes, it will help you out for First Semester. Man, I could count on one hand the number of times I went to class..

Hey man,

He might not have the most tact, but, Skipper is right. You can study, take classes, dance, shake, and do a little hula... the classes here are taught at such an advanced pace that it won't matter what you do ahead of time you have to learn it here, their way. Take the time off and enjoy your summer. If you want to do anything, pick up a Netters and a Lippincott and thumb through them if you get bored and are looking to "get a head start". But, as far as taking extra undergrad classes, they're useless because these profs test on what THEY teach... get used to it (doesnt matter what school) .

Later,
Nagy

PS - drop the profanity, it's a sign of an ignorant mind when you can't choose from any of the millions of others in the English language to get your point across.

1) About food, can you find in St.Maarten most or all of the things you can find in a supermarket in the US? - About a mile from school is the Food Express. It is small and has the basic things to get by, nothing fancy. If you want variety go to Grand Marche in Philipsburg its more pricey, but much better selection. Not to mention going to philipsburg is a task because of traffic.

2) Is there alot of vegeterian food available in resturaunts and supermarkets? - Interesting enough the Food Express has quite a few veggie products availble. (Vegan burgers, lots of cheeses and vegetables too)

3) If you could have taken a class BEFORE medical school that would have helped you alot, what class or classes would it have been? - Seriously taking any class in undergrad that you will take here would help a bit. It will allow you to grasp concepts quicker and not be totally lost most of the time. Its no promise at all because we go a lot deeper here than in undergrad. The most MAJOR point I can make is Learn to Study efficiently. Study skills is something they don't teach you here or in undergrad. You WILL NEED them here.

4) What is the class size of an incoming class, and what is the size of the class that graduates? So many factors. The biggest class is in August 100-150, then its Janurary with about 60-80 roughly, and Aprils class is always the smallest, not sure how many. Can't comment on graduating classes because i don't know.

5) If I start in Aug 06, I know that I wouldn't have classes from May until August of 07, Would I be able to keep taking classes over the summer? - Like someone mentioned here earlier. There is no summer break. Its a straight 20 months with around a week break between semesters.

6) Residencies - Is it harder to get a residency than someone from say SGU if I had the similar USMLE scores and grades? - The school you attending is only a small fraction as to how well you did on your STEPS 1 and 2 and grades in med school. If you really blow the Step 1 and 2 out of the water and have decent grades you will be just as competitive with any us grad. If I went to a residency program that put me down because I went to a carribean school, then I wouldn't want to work there anyway because they have worse problems like judging people. I would hope they weigh you on ACTUAL facts like you test scores and LOR who YOU are and how well you will perform as a Doc.

thanks guys
I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Good question... I never saw a hurricane on the island so I dunno how to answer that question. I guess stock up on a few essential items and hope that the administration has a back-up plan to continue studies somewhere stateside with minimal disruption while the island is fixed back up.

Also, concider waterproof bags to store things during hurricane that you can't lug over to the school.

I agree with you. If you have the time and drive to take these classes, they cant hurt you. This whole message to the new people to relax, enjoy their free time and panic once you are on the island is something that "older students" have said on this forum way before i became a student. Some do choose to enjoy their free time. I did! But if you are still in school, in college, and can take some courses to prepare you, and on top of that you want to, then do it. People dont go to medical school, not even in the caribbean, without having some kind of science background. I took plenty of classes in undergrad that helped me in med school. the only class i did not take that i should have, was anatomy; and the only reason i did not take that is because my stupid pre med advisor thought it would be a waste of time. My advice to you and all other prospective students is to take all that you can take before going to med school and stop listenting to sarcastic posters on this forum that state that you will arrive on the island and be scared out of your mind. Chance has it that the people that say you will be shocked in first semester were probably the most shocked when they were there....

later,

ps. some doctors i have worked with so far in clinicals act like they were born out of their mother's womb with a white coat and a stethoscope, forgetting what it was like to be a student.... in my opinion the same goes with some of the upper classmen in basic sciences.
