Orthopaedic residency matches
I was wondering if there has been any orthopaedic residency matches from AUC. I have been accepted to SABA but I know that they don’t have any matched in that area. I am considering applying to AUC but I wanted to know a little more about the match results for the recent years. Thank you for your reply.

Tough
Ortho is tough, really tough. Even for US studs. I don't know anyone who tried recently. You will need absolutely stellar board scores. G

orthopedics
If you are truly set on orthopedics, I would advise spending the next year or two working on your undergraduate GPA and MCAT scores and obtaining a position at a US school.....you may consider going to graduate school assuming your undergrad GPA and MCATs are decent. Even if there are one or two caribbean grads per year getting ortho (there may not be that many), your chances are slim to none.....closer to none. I have been speaking with some american grads who are struggling to get interviews. Even US grads with USMLE scores above the mean have tough times. Therefore, even if you do have stellar scores (stellar meaning >230) coming from the caribbean, your chances are still slim. However, having said that.....there is a small chance......anything is possible, but not all things (including a caribbean grad getting orthopedics) are probable. Sorry to sound so negative, just being realistic. You should also consider DO school.....easier to get into, more likely to be competitive for ortho vs. IMG.

Going to a US med school is the best advice you can get, however ti is not always possible of course.
If you do go the IMG route and end up not matching for ortho as a residency, you can always try again to get it as a fellowship. It is not necesarily easier, but with US post grad training, you will likely be more competitive.

fellowship?
are there ortho surg fellowships?
which residency do you do first.? they are always inventing new training programs so I'm not surprised I hadn't heard of it. I've heard of hand fellowships after ortho, but never an ortho fellowship. Far as I knew it was a straight residency dittos the "get into the USA" advice. My roomie at AUC, transferred to Univ Miami after 5th semester ( straight into MS3 if my memory is correct) His USMLE scores were only in the 215 range. He did a transition year ( after not matching for ortho ) Kissed about a million butts in his transition year, and did every ortho elective he could. he didn't match after another round! Mind you this guy was a pretty big time college football player, and had lots of good connections. He ended up doing peds and peds critical care and is about to finish his PICU fellowship. Take home message : Ortho is damned competative 250 USMLE and you still have very small chance from the Caribbean, though a SGU grad matched in New Jersey a few years ago for ortho, and his USMLE was high 240's by all means you must go to SGU if you want ortho ( if you are choosing a caribbean school ) or try one of the Irish or (real) British schools nest choice would be DO, but I'll bet ortho is pretty competative too, even in osteopathic residencies |
