i am sure that the education is just as good as american schools, but im not referring to the schooling in my posts, but getting in.

so why dont people lead a relaxed life in university without having to deal with the volunteering, lack of social life, constant studying, etc that the stereotypical pre-med student has to go through.. and just go to the carribbean?

I see what you're saying, but I think any pre-med student would be shooting themselves in the foot if they started out with that lackadaisical attitude. I wonder what their study habits would be like once they got to the Caribbean.

Myst,
I am a first semester here on the island and didn't have the best stats either. (MCAT 23, 3.0GPA) I didn't stand a chance in US medical schools. No matter what I could have did, take more classes, Retake MCAT it wasn't going to imporve much as in my chances. I just needed someone to give me a chance to SHOW them I CAN do the work and become a sucessful physician. AUC offered me that chance, and I am not going to throw that away. The classes here are VERY tough, much more than ANY undergraduate I had ever taken. It is the same material you get at ANY other US school, but since the US government/State governments won't spend anymore money on building more US medical schools they are very selective. I was not allowing the downfalls of the local governments to enfluence what I wanted to do with my life. AUC has a GREAT reputation for turning out some of the BEST physicians. It was all there for me, they offered me a chance and they had a good reputation. Nothing is standing in my way. Nothing.

getting in is easy, finishing is hard!

Hello, I could not help but read your questions and feel the need to respond. I will try to cover as much as possible. I am about to graduate from AUC in April 2006. So here is some info:
1) AUC is a FOR PROFIT medical school. so they let in some folks who just plain can't cut medical school so they can make some money. So all you have to do is not be an idiot. Study hard, medical school is very managable. you will see many of your peers not make it clinical rotations.
2) As far as being canadian, I have many friends in the same place. What happens is that it is very difficult to get back to canada. A caribbean degree and good/excellent board scores will get you almost any residency, but as a canadian they will have to sponsor you for a visa, of which there are 2 kinds. One gets you a green card after residency and the other makes you go back to your country of origin for at least 1 year, before applying again to come and work in the US. The good visas are hard to get because you are going to be up against lots of foreign physicians from other countries that have tons of experience and will need little supervision, so it is hard. You can also try to get a residency in canada, again almost impossible, but you can take the canadian boards and apply.
My advice is that if you are going to go to AUC, which is the best of any of them (great place to live and a solid education), try to get your US aunts/relatives to start getting you sponsored for a green card, it will make your life much easier.
good luck and choose AUC. the other schools are on islands with nothing to do. St Marteen in amazing, so much fun and lots to do! My wife and I loved it.

What do u mean many will not make in clinicals>? I thought Step 1 was the road block, if you can make it past step I, shouldn't the same work carry you thru clinicals?

Poop, with nothing to do, I may actually have to drop my umbrella drink and Caribbean adventures and replace it with a book.

Sorry, I couldn't resist islandrockdoc.
I'll be going to Ross in May, where there is NOTHING to do. Guess what?
I'm glad. I'm going to there to study and not to vacation, so if the school provides the facilities for me to study, I could not care less about what the rest of the island offers.
I assume that if you are bringing others with you, this might make things different, but for me. It really doesn't.
