    Computers

I am looking over computers for school and communication with home via the internet. Do you guys use your computers in class or mainly use them at home. What type would you recommend considering where we are in St Martin? Notebook seem the best or desktop?
Maybe its the bumps that make life interesting and let one discern the endeavors they may achieve.

    lap top

notebook is the best bang for your buck since most notes are on cd if you have a lap top you don't buy any notes from note service you just copy it from the library copy(saves about $100 bucks a semester) also it is a lot easier to transport it here. later

    I want a ibook...

Most, if not all, of the first semester notes are in Powerpoint so you should not have a problem if you have MS Powerpoint installed on your Mac. There are quite a new Powerbooks(those nice 17") and ibooks on campus so I think the Apple crowd can/does get by.

I think histo-time is a Windows program so you might have a problem using it for 2nd semester but that's what a microscope is for right?

I love macs too, but go with a dell of someother pc. I think most of the programs (like the new anatomy cd in the library and others) won't work on Macs.

Also- I've heard Macs have trouble with the local internet systems. One guy I talked to said Caribserve wouldn't be compatable with my mac, then another said it would just be more expensive...

Is there any reason you need to have a writable cd drive installed in your laptop? Is a DVD drive important for class? Is there any reason one would have to bring their laptop to class other then just using it to take notes?

DVD drives are critical in Biostats and History of Medicine. You NEED to have one in order to stay awake. Bring along your favorite DVD collection(I've got Simpsons on my computer) and watch the 50 minutes of pure boredom melt away.

As for Recordable drives, I think it would make your life easier to have one but it is not necessarily essential since our computer lab has a CD duplicator that ***** and some of the upper semesters convinced a company to donate.

    MOst

ppl in my class are burning powerpoints notes minutes before the lecture starts. We use ours everyday and at our own convenience. I never use the one in the lab so I dont know if it is used often.

I would always get a burner with a new computer. You can backup data, burn software/audio CDs, make duplicates of CDs, etc...

I just bought a new laptop and will bring my desktop over when my wife arrives late Jan.

I'm not much of a Mac user but I do know there is a Windows Emulator for Mac by Microsoft called Virtual PC for Mac. You can actually load a copy of Windows on your Macintosh and run most of your Windows apps on your mac! You gotta ask the Mac gurus out there for more info. I'm just a newbie mac user.

Time to hit the microsoft company store and buy some Microsoft software at 90% off. (one of the perks of living in Seattle)

    Too bad I can't buy a Boeing 777 for 90 percent off.
