    Waring to Future Students ...

Do NOT under any circumstances lease or deal with ARTHUR's Car rentals. He will rip you off ... I was not warned before I dealt with him. So take my advice for what it's worth ... Marshall Motors is the best place to lease from. Arthur is a CROOK!!!!
I will not go into details here ... but I will answer any questions about this guy if anyone would like to know.

    Arthurs Car Rental

I absolutely agree with the origianal post. Do not lease from Arthur's Car Rental! If for any reason you have to end your lease before your contract is up, he will charge you $50/day for the rental. So in essence, you will not get any money back.

    no on leasing

tRmedic21 makes a very good argument for buying rather than leasing. That's what I plan to do. Do student tend to buy and sell to other students or go through a dealer? Sounds like Marshall Motars is the best dealer.

    Additional Info on Arthur's

First and foremost, STAY AWAY FROM ARTHUR!!! It's better to walk.

Beware the Christmas break! Several students from 4th semester who leased from Arthur got screwed when they got back from break. Arthur gave them assurances that he would be at the airport to pick them up and return their cars to them. Needless to say, he was no where to be found and the students were left to fend for themselves at the airport. To add insult to injury, he had their cars rented out to tourists so they couldn't get the cars back for days/weeks. The worst of it is he couldn't see the problem! The dean had to get involved and the students ended up getting a refund on the balance of the lease. Of course, Arthur wrote them a check, which was no good! One couple I know had to go to the police station in Phillipsburg to press charges for passing a bad check! In the end, it got straightened out, but what a hassle to have to deal with at the beginning of the semester!

Another student I know had and accident in one of Arthur's cars. It was truly an accident. It was raining and he hydroplaned into another car. Arthur flipped! He tried to get the student to get him $1000, in cash, to pay the deductible that day! Again, the dean had to get involved and straighten things out. To beat all, a month after the incident was supposedly settled, a $500 charge showed up on his credit card, which he then had to dispute with Visa. I'm not sure how that one is playing out.

I know other students who leave their cars with Arthur for break clean and with a full tank of gas and get it back dirty and on empty. Arthur actually has the audacity to scold them for trash in the car, etc.

Lastly, I do have some motive for this posting. I spoke with Arthur when I got here. I was willing to rent from him ($6 a day!), but I only wanted to lease for a semester, to see how it worked out. I wasn't really sure about him picking up my car to "wash it" once a week. He treated me like a dumb woman and tried to "handle me." He insisted on all 20 months, up front. I got spooked (Thank God!) and walked.

Again I say to you, RUN DON'T WALK AS FAR AWAY FROM ARTHUR AS YOU CAN GET!!

    hmm

so if i'm already leasing from arthur, would it be better to leave my car at my apartment over winter break? i have a club, and we have a security guard at night...

any other advice on how to keep from getting screwed if i'm already in a contract with him?

    I think...

I think he makes you give him your car over break. There was even a story of a student who was staying here over break and he told them he wanted his car back so he could rent it out, even though they were still going to be here. His response - "You don't have to go to school, so you don't need a car over break." Once again, this was a story, so I don't know if it was true or not.

But don't trust the guards at your place to keep him out of your car, he is local, and so are they.... always remember that!

    The locals stick together

I helped a friend hide his car from Arthur over last Christmas break and Arthur was absolutely furious. He spent the entire break scouring the island for it. I'm sure he would have found it, too, if my house didn't have a private drive tucked into a remote corner.

You could try a club, but Arthur brags about being able to get around any of them. It might be to your best interest to let him take the car at break and get out of your contract so you can go to a reputable company. I would be interested to see what he'd say to you asking about the students he swindled last Christmas.

I honestly don't understand why SGA still sells ad space to him. Most of the students who have dealt with him have their own personal horror stories, but he still gets to prey on the fresh meat every semester. Sorry we weren't of help sooner.

    do what i did

leave it at school and give the key to a friend youtrust to move it around or drive it once in a while to make it look like you are still here. even during break now that the library and lab is open there will be traffic in the parking lot...

    equation

they are korean built cars so you have to take the number of total cars you go through and divide it by 3 and this will equal the true total of "real" cars you go through.....no the first few just gave out. yes i went mudding, it really is funny b/c my whole truck is covered with mud and evryone on the island turns andlooks when i drive by like they have never seen a truck with two inches of mud everywhere. the scenery is really quite nice up from the mountains.

    Hope everyone understands now ...

Obviously ... this situation with this CROOK has affected enough people ... hopefully we will not have anymore stories to tell from any newbies or anyone for that matter.
