No chance...

For all the folks that ask if their track record will get them in...

I just got a rejection letter so I dialed up my friendly admissions advisor. Apparently I have no chance of ever getting in to school there solely because of grades from 20-years ago.

I just completed a post-bacc program of all required science classes and got a 3.85 GPA. I also have a 3.7 GPA from my MBA program 8-years ago. My 2.5 GPA from undergrad courses from 20-years ago apparently sunk me. They averaged my new grades in with my old grades and I fell below the cut.

Wow...that's unfortunate. Have you tried other schools (SGU, Ross, Saba)? Perhaps you'll have better luck there.

Aloha,

There's gotta be something major that you're missing. Averaging your new and old grades, you'd have above a 3.0. Even taking the weighting into account since I'm sure you took more classes in undergrad than post grad, you'd still probably have at least a 3.0! I'm sure there are students currently at AUC that had at or below a 3.0 GPA. Also, although I don't have a ton of experience, I can't imagine an AUC counselor saying you have no chance of ever getting accepted based on 20 year old grades, there's just no way. You didn't bother to list your MCAT scores though. Maybe that had something to do with it.

If your admissions counselor was as tactless as you claim, did you try to maybe speak to another one. Something about what you're saying (maybe all of it) just doesn't seem to make sense.

If you fail at AUC, SGU, or Ross why not transfer to SMU, if you fail at SMU, why not try another SMU.

no worries...

I originally posted because 1) people get crushed on this site when they ask if they would get accepted with certain stats, and 2) kinda surprised at the selection process. Hopefully this will let people know you gotta have some "basic" numbers to even get in the game...

There's a bunch of 'em out there...just make sure you do your due diligence and research all of your options before committing to one of them.

Best of luck!

...

tafkamm67, why do you waste even 5 min thinking about this. With your stats (Post-Bacc 3.85, 24 MCAT) you actually have a legitimate shot at some DO programs in the US. Needless to say that there are other Caribbean med schools that you can apply to.
