Elective Rotations only in certain states?

Morning,

Does anyone on here know the actual rules about elective rotations? I was under the impression that you can do them at any accredited teaching hospital IN ANY STATE; Cores you can only take at AUC-associated hospitals.

Here's my situation: I had a professor in undergrad who is currently now the director of medical education at a large teaching hospital in Pennsylvania. I did an internship at this hospital through her connections. I spoke with one of the clinical directors at MEAS who said that we are not able to do ANY rotations in PA; (Core or otherwise), but we can practice as residents and physicians in the state without restriction. HOWEVER, I recently spoke with another representative from MEAS who said that elective rotations can be done in ANY state, as long as the hospital is an educational certified hospital (I forget the acronym). This representative provided an example of a recent student who did a rotation (elective) in Houston TX, which is a state that AUC grads traditionally have more difficulty getting licensure.

If anyone can help, especially someone doing rotations, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, susqu04

hi

My understanding of it was that if you want to be licensed in the State of PA later on, you should NOT do a single rotation there during med school. It was something that the Medical Board of PA had as a rule, not AUC. I also believe it had to do with fmg's only, not usmg's, who are still eligible for 'away rotations' in PA from other States.

The best thing you could do would be to call the tge Board in PA, and talk to someone in licensing.

My information comes from friends who want to be licensed in PA.

Jules
