Health Ins

I am not quite sure if this topic has been touched on, but: 1) does the school offer ins to the students 2) is it any good 3) does it also offer a family plan

My family might be coming down now and this is a sticking point. It is me, wife and 3yr old, so I am concerned about the quality of ins available. My wife currently works for Rush Medical School, so she has good ins, but 20mos away from her and the little guy is gonna hurt. But thats besides the point.

Any help with the ins questions would be a great help. Thanks.

This topic has been touched on many times. But yes, the school does offer health insurance, and there is a family plan (kids cost more). I don't know if it's any good, I never had to use it!

AUC's insurance company is through MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company. I'm not sure how good it is because I haven't to use it yet. You should contact MEAS to find out more information regarding the health insurance policy.

Rates depend on age and start at $300 for students, $800 for spouses, and $400 for kids. (I don't have the insurance paperwork in front of me so someone please correct the number about the cost for children if this is wrong.)

If your wife does stay home and work, you can sign a waiver for AUC's insurance coverage if you are covered under her insurance.

The bottom line is that the insureance is OK for students...but it is VERY expensive for spouses and children. Best to get another type of insureance for them, but make sure it will be ok down here. The ER on the dutch side only takes the AUC insurance and cash...nothing else. Tourists can't even use blue cross, my fiancee found that out the hard way.

The insurance is not that good.....It does not cover much at all and is based on every student. So what does that mean? Well that means if a lof of students start making claims or 1 student gets seriously injured.....all of our premiums go up to pay for it.....so keep that in mind. Basically if one student had a med-transport to miami everyone's premiums would skyrocket.....I got this info directly from the company btw. Most of the medical care down here is cheap anyways, I know most people dont even run it thru the insurance bc its too much of a hassle. Also, my insurance PHS - covers me internationally, so even if the French hospital doesnt accept it I would pay out of pocket and then get every bit of that reimbursed to me.....That is also how this mega-life insurance works too, you pay and then get reimbursed, however with PHS I'm covered for say more than 1 MRI.....which actually exceeds the mega-life limit.....just some fyi
