    Laptop Repair Services?

    Hi everyone,

I am in the process of purchasing a laptop for the Fall semester. I am curious as to wether or not St. Maartens has a general electronic repair store or service down there if (God-Forbid) anything goes wrong with my computer. Any input would be greatly appreciated !

Yes, there is actually one around Simpson Bay. Forgot what it was called. Um... no one takes their computers to get fixed by a local here though, even if it had hardware problems.. I mean why would you when you can just have the resident nerd of your class fix it for you.

    welcome

    Anytime!
Anencephalic is right. Those IT guys can do something. Although I haven't heard of any success stories yet from any student :o But i'd like to if anyone on this board has gone that route.

FYI, AUC has recommended Dell for your laptop purchase:

    http://premier.dell.com/portal/messa...p;cs=RC1002930

Check out the link above. Supposedly, there was some talk about contract repairs for students buying laptops through Dell. Laptops needing repairs would be sent to Puerto Rico to be serviced (apparently by a Dell dealer there?). No information as to whether this is covered by warranty, contract, or the student.

I would call MEAS and ask about their required Dell laptop and ask one of their reps about servicing computers bought via this contract/partnership with Dell and AUC.

Let us know what you find out!

    Don't buy a Dell

For factory work, their is only one option, and it's on the french side.
If you want access to it include international travel option on service warraunty. The 1st year on most factory does include this.

Don't forget to check out a couple of tablet's. Invaluable. 90% of prof's lecture off of PowerPoints, which means you can write ( very nicely in fact) on the screen with a tablet. my $0.02 's

Most however just suffer w/ a broken laptop until they go home... or they don't have warrenty and take it to a "local" shop.
FYI, if your HD dies all (most) companies will ship you a new one to a forwarder address in Miami no problem.

im lookin to get a apple powerbook, b/c frankly i dont want to deal with spyware and virurs ect... associated w/ any WinXP system... and im fairly tech savy and have decent skills in makin stuff work together... i know for sure that AppleCare's service plan supports worldwide support for 3 years...

i know a lot of ppl are afraid to deviate from the norm, but i really hate dell, their systems are cheap for one reason.. they use sub-par parts that work for your specific systems (only stating for desktops), so if you intend to upgrade in the future you should be careful... but i have friends that went to SGU and got a dell system and had issues and just stuck with them till they got to the states during a break to get fixed...

its really about preference, but if you switch just look me up when im on the island and im sure i can straighten you out for the most part whenever necessary software wise... apple or windows...

and from what im getting from the posts around her you basically need a laptop to get on the net and be compatible w/ microsoft word and powerpoint... and most likely PDF files as well which is a breeze...

You won't have any problems fitting in. The Mac denizens are a growing population at AUC...
