Need to decide on dorm housing (double occup) vs. off campus

I just called MEIO today to ask about dorm availability and they told me that they only have double rooms left! She then told me that if I really wanted a single room, I should look for off campus housing. With only 3 weeks left before I arrive onto the island, I really need to decide what to do.

Those who have shared a dorm room with someone else, do you recommend it?

Should I just take the double room, tolerate a roommate for a semester, then move out? Or should I definitely start looking for an off campus apt because sharing a room with someone is REALLY bad? Are there pros to sharing a room with another person?

(I've shared rooms with roommates during undergrad, and although it was "okay" I really prefer having my own space. Besides, this is med school so I figure the situation is different.).

DORM

Hi there. Personally I cant stand a roomate and been living in a single bed room apt since I came to SXM. the other day I was invited to my friend's dorm room and as we walked in, I was little confused to see two "total strangers" in the living room. if you are not used to it, it is not easy.

if you really want to live in a single room, It is also very much possible to get one if you fly down here a week early or even less. there are tones of single bed room off housing options and my recommendation is to get a car if you want a single bed room, However, I live only three minutes walk from campus and so others so it is still possible for off housing without a car.

the rent is about $700-$1300 mostly start from small studio unit to fancy one with pool. There are many options.

Personally I also prefers peace and quite place of my own. I pay $1000 which is not much different from AUC dorm for double occupany.

Best regards

Just for clarity- The dorms are apartments and each person has their own room, so it's not like you're shacked up in a double bed or anything.

I'd say live in the dorms for a semester, you'll meet more people, be able to make a better judgement on what apartment you want, and hell, you may even like your roommate. Stranger things happen..

I'll go with beach bum on this one. It's only a semester and then you can have your choice of apartments off campus. It sure beats getting stuck in a crappy contract.

I'd get off-campus if I were you. Dorm living is very expensive here. Rent is about $900, and laundry is I believe about $6 per load!! There is plenty of houseing right near campus so I suggest you come a few weeks early (maybe about 2 weeks or so) and take a look around. When I say close, I mean these places are almost ON campus themselves. They are about a 5 minute walk. Plus, they are usually a little cheaper than living on campus. I don't blame you about hesitating the double room...I like my privacy also. Double rooms are 2 separate bedrooms and bathrooms with a common living/dining area and kitchen. All rooms are air conditioned and have a balcony.

Oh good. I was under the impression that the double occupancy rooms were 1 room with 2 bunkbeds. (thats how it was with the dorms back in undergrad) Getting my own room is really my main concern..i dont' really care about sharing the living room or kitchen or bathroom.

the doubles in the dorms include your own bathroom. the apartment consists of a shared kitchen and living room area and a balcony. each person has their own bedroom, bathroom and closet. i would not immediatelly count out the dorm possibility. you can meet a lot of new people living in the dorms. as far as study time, there are plenty of spaces at school that you can hide and study.

later,
