how much stuff does a normal person bring??

hey guys - i've loved reading this site. it's helping me lots for my move down to the island for this jan's class.

i'm in the process of moving out of my apartment right now, and i'm just wondering how much a "normal" person brings when they first move to the island... maybe some girls could help me out. i have 1 and a half big duffel bags full of clothes already... and i'm thinking this may be a tad excessive.

please help me out!

thanks.

bring it all

I only brought "summer" clothes as well as my computer stuff and some dive gear.

It took 3 huge duffels that each weighed around 80lbs. I had to pay extra to bring the bags but it was worth it to get all of my toys down here

I can't speak for the other girls but my wife.... wow.

I had about half a suitcase... she had the other 3 1/2 and a bunch of carry ons. But bring as much as you can, I would have if she let me.

i would say clothes wise bring what you would think you need for a caribbean island....that is one thing you probably cannot easily get here (referring to clothes)

let me correct the Skipper. You can get lots of clothes here, AUC t-shirts all at note service. Name brand designer stuff on the French side. 4 for $10 dollar SXM T-shirts in P'burg. There probably isn't much you'd buy though.

Sorry Skipper

.............

I had 4 suitcases (big ones). I brought a weeks worth of clothes, all my bedding, 6 sets of towles, my computer, shampoo and other necessitites. the towels and bedding took up the most room but I am gald I brought them because the quality here for these items is really cruddy and they are expensive. When I go home at Christmas I will buy more summer clothes as what I can get here is crap or expensive designer stuff. I bought some stuff when I got here like cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, a few kitchen items, and some beach towels otherwise I was all set.

Go to you local wall mart and get the "space" bags. These helped alot to pack my bedding and towels, they took up about a third of the space one i squzed them all down.

I would also suggest that any expensive electrionics you bring (laptop, mp3 player etc..) you put in a carry one cause no telling what will happen in the belly of the plane.

We brought everything that we didn't see available in stores - tennis shoes, jeans (clothes), computer & other PC stuff, cooking gear, cosmetics (they have almost none here and what they do have is really expensive) those toothbrushes that cost 8 bucks but work like an automatic toothbrush with replacement heads, radio (expensive here and crappy for a little cd player) books for pleasure reading.

Basically when you move down, try to have all your home comfort things. You'll have enough to do once you get here with school and I would suggest to bring as much as you can so that you don't have to learn the hard way about the lack of 1 stop shopping/24 hour shopping. I mean things you won't say "Ughgh! I can't believe I forget to pack that I am so screwed now!"
