AUC and lack of Southern Clinical Sites

Hello all, I am writting to find out more information regarding AUC's inability or resistance to open more southern sites for the growing number of southern students from AK,AL,GA,MS,LA,FL,NC,SC. The number of students from these states is growing but AUC has not offered more sites to help us out. They have actually lost a site down in Louisiana and have done very little to open sites in other states. I hear there is a Committee of some sort that has been meeting with Ross, Saba and Statia in efforts to help meet clinical needs for core rotations in these states. Many students are passing the word that before you consider paying more tuition to AUC than other schools you may want to consider that you will more than likely not be able to return to the south to complete your core rotations. I know many of you have complained about this fact for many many semesters on many other message boards and still have nothing from AUC but broken promises and no southern sites in the above states. I am curious to hear what the rest of you think about this problem. The word is the clinical coordinator and the owner can not seem to communicate to come up with a solution to the problem. Therefore, I hear the students are taking matters into their own hands and are working on a mass transfer to one of the above mentioned schools. If anyone can tell me more about this I would love to hear more about the transfer and benefits. Thanks .

yes its regretful that AUC doesnt have many clinical sites in the south. however, they just opened up full cores in shreveport, la. they also have family practice in tallahassee, fl (isnt much.... but a start).

but to move to another school over this is crazy. remember.... AUC grads can practice in ALL 50 states and we also get federal financial aid. they have a one of the longest and PROVEN track records in the carib.

i dont know about you, but im spending 1.5 years morooned on a rock in the carib. where i spend the next 7-9 months of cores does not really matter. it will be in the states and thats all i care about. then you can do your electives wherever your heart desires.

i think you got your eyes off the ball. its the future that matters. being able to be fully liscensed in any state you choose and having a school with a proven track record for education is what matters.

from the above post i can tell that you do not know anything about current events regarding clinical sites at AUC. if your concerns are really valid, one 10 minute phone call to MEIO in miami would clear up all your misconceptions... which from the looks of it, is all of your post above.

later,

AUC and lack of Southern Clinical Sites

hi all,

i actually sent Phil Green a letter regarding this (my hometown: ATLANTA!!). I asked that since St Matts has it (dunno about the other schools) in ATL at least, why can't AUC, a school that has been around much longer? I asked him what the current situation is, and if the admin is looking into southern sites, especially such a regional hub like Atlanta. No response yet, will update if i get any new info.

I would think the best thing to do is contact them directly, and putting in a suggestion to the admin to see if they are willing to get more southern sites.

just my $0.02

Is this talk or can others confirm this. All cores? I am assuming the LSU med school in Shreveport? I saw Brentwood Hospital (LSU owned) in Shreveport on the new AUC webpage. This is just a mental health place though I believe. I think only psych would be offered there.

Really want to hear more about this. I live in Shreveport now and will be starting in JAN.

cores

Yeah Bill Cornbread, I would say you're right in that its likely just the psych rotation. You can always do all your electives in Louisiana. Cores have to be done at the AUC affiliated hospitals. I think the one in Florida (Tallahassee) is only the Family Medicine...but maybe you can do electives there too? Best folks to ask are Victor or Phil at MEIO.

aucgirl,

Thank you for your enlightened post. You must either truly attend this school or have "reliable" sources from administration as you have information that many people, including the the president of student government association, are not fortunate enough to have (which is funny because he meets with the Dean on a regular basis).

Please stop spreading rumors like this. Your obvious lack of information belies your true motive to either persuade current AUC students to transfer or dissuade potential students from coming.

If you are really trying to find information as you indicate above, then please contact MEIO directly and ask to speak with their clinical coordinators. They, unlike you, have the unique perspective of actually knowing what developments are currently materializing in regards to clinicals for AUC students.

As for your comment regarding meeting with a committee with other Carib schools, I am not aware of this....

Aloha,

Aloha,
Actually, there was a meeting, they are shutting down *all* clinical rotations. Seems like they found a loophole and can graduate all of us w/o clinicals. Just thought you should know about that...

souther sites

OK,
All of you AUC cheerleaders out there i would like you to disprove one thing that AUCgirl has stated. The only, only being ONE site in the entire south at this moment is psychiatry. There are no cores anywhere in the south at this time and this is a FACT!!!!!!!! That is complete misinformation on any cores being available in Louisiana. I am not saying that they are not working on more sites at this time and i am sure they are putting in 100% into doing this. But the facts are as stated above. I know because i am a clinical student.
As far as students meeting with other schools i have no idea of this and would not recommend it. AUC is still, in my opinion, one of the best schools. I dont think transferring to another caribbean school is the answer. Just my opinion
