    Question

Hey I have been accepted for the Fall of '05 and was wondering if anyone else has taken their dog with them? From what I can gather SXM will allow the dog in if it has a current vaccination record. Does anyone know if there is a quarintine time as well?

I've taken all of our dogs to SXM, just about one of the easiest things I've ever done. The only obstacle is to make sure the outside temperature is acceptable where ever you connect through (Puerto Rico, Miami).

Great vets in Cole Bay, also listed in the archives.

Lots of people take their pets. Just make sure you watch out for strays. (I carried pepper spray).

    Oh yeah,

searching the AUC forum, using "pets or dogs or veterinarians" seemed to have pretty good results..

What?! You mean it can actually function as a search engine without dredging up too much **?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Faith!

Yeah, bringing a pet down here is not a problem at all. Just check with the airlines about the requirments about transporting your pet. Other than that, all the only thing you really need is a rabies vaccination. Also, I would recommend starting your dog on those chewable heartworm things from Hartz before coming. There are a lot of mosquitos here and that is how animals get heartworm. K9 Advantix works really well to keep your dog pest free. It works really well and is the only product that works on mosquitos. Have fun and welcome to the party.

    Thanks

Thanks ya'll. I figued as much, but it's nice to know from people with experience. I'm not to worried about the mosquito and such since I use all that stuff now. Besides it can't be any worse than it is here.

If you have a large dog, it might be a pain to find a flight for it. I've been trying for six weeks to get my German ******** down here. We're from Indiana, and he's too big to fly on any plane that goes from Indianpolis to Miami, so my husband will have to drive him to Miami from Indianapolis and try to get him on a stand-by cargo flight that only leaves if there ends up being enough demand for it. So, he's going to have to reserve a whole week to do nothing but camp out at the Miami airport and hope that at some point during that week the flight will be full enough to take off. There's only one cargo flight from Miami to SXM per day, and it leaves around 11:00 in the afternoon. Dogs can only fly on it if the temp is below 90 degrees at that time. So, if you're coming in the summer, it will be even harder. You used to be able to fly dogs down on a US Air cargo plane no problem, but they no longer fly cargo planes here. So, American is your only option. They have a lot of rules and restrictions, but they have a good reputation for humane treatment of animals, so I'll tolerate the headache if I can ever end up getting him down here. Right now we're shooting for the middle of November. Oh, if money is not an issue, you can look into Pet Taxi. It's a bit pricey (around $1600), but it's not as much of a hassle as my method. If you have a small dog, just disregard this post. At any rate, best of luck to you...it'll be great for Duke to have another play buddy!

No problems with the size. He's a beagle and loves to play with larger dogs.

You may also need a health certificate within 10 days of travel. I would definitely contact the airline you travel with for more specifics.
