Thread: Highly Questionable Competence

Many of us- whom are post Basic Sciences- look back and wonder why on earth a first grade classroom operates with more class and structure then our 'admin'.

1)ROBBERY
Some two semesters ago, there were armed robberies back to back mind you, at BB's and the summit resort area where students eat, walk and chill out. The admin tells SXM, yo police, you guys need to come make a presence here, our American/Canadian students can get shot at. What does SXM police do? They GO RAMPANT on our students car, ticketing them, towing them, and mouthing off to us with no checks and balances. Most students paid up a thousand in fees to get their cars/trucks back.
The admin just sat back and watched us get raped by these tickets and fees.

2) OUR SECURITY GUARDS
God forbid you stay late at night and watch these security guards, employed by MEAS, go through the clothing bins, food drive boxes and take a pick at what they want. They SLEEP through the night in the multipurpose room while they should be on guard protecting the school's parking lots and dorms from wild drunks.

3) WILD DRUNKS
speaking of wild drunks, I hope your not a homosexual who will be harassed, beat up, and threatened to DEATH by another group of students at white coat DINNER. Dont call Dr.T either, he doesnt want to hear your delusional remarks of death threats. And no we wont grant you an extension for your block exams even though you have a black eye.

4) NO RESPECT
No one in the admin cares whether you have been working as the engineering official of the school building for a decade. The day we want to throw you out is the day we will disrespect our dignity and kick you to the curb in open day light for all the students to witness. Have some professionalism, please.

5) I Cee Mania (ICM)
What an underdeveloped system of grading. What a manic way to schedule 5th semester.

6)STEP 1
THERE IS NOTHING UNIQUE OR SPECIAL ABOUT THE PASS RATE. We weed ALL the students who cant pass this beast by 5th semester. PUHLEASE. Its not so much AUC's education that brings about this pass rate.Its the will of the hard working student who will passes the usmle.

7) Passing students
Yes, students who pass are hand picked and given second chances. Transparency anyone?

8) Post BASIC SCIENCES
They are forcing a lot of us to go to the UK. Yes i said it. Enjoy.

THAT is not going to go over too well. During the last visit from OCSA, they admitted that they were 80 spots short and then we promptly got an email retracting that statement. I suppose this is because the UK can accomodate 250+? The latest visit was from CAO about two weeks ago and he said that we had too many slots in the US for certain cores.

Tell us more about how they're forcing you to go to the UK. Are you one of the people who absolutely refuses to move to NYC to take one of the millions of rotations they have there?

There are no spots in NY right now. By force, this is what they do. "Hello student. We have this core schedule made for you in the UK, please accept. If you cannot accept, you will have to apply for ANOTHER leave of absence and there is NO TELLING when spots in the US will open up. GOOD DAY!"

Does OSCA ever release lists of WHAT is available and what ISNT. DO we really ever know which hospitals offer JUST electives or cores (besides the big three). Do they tell us when SLOTS open? When core cycles start or end.

WHY DOES ROSS AND SJU DO SO?

NO. They dont want to let us know.

People, go to St.Georges. They are bought out half our sites anyways.

Then how is it that BK just told us two weeks ago that there was a SURPLUS of core spots in the US? Were you offered a slot somewhere else in the US?

Level, when did you get your scores in?

Noone is forcing anyone to go to the UK :/

I didn't want to go to the UK, requested I wanted to rotate in the Northeast, and bam, got just what I wanted. Then again, I just wrote a plain and simple e-mail and was polite on the phone, but I'm sure those two most people already do.

Also, the only people that should make claims are people who are off the island and have solid evidence instead of "rumors", because I can make up a rumor right now, but can't show any actual evidence.

During my class's OSCA visit, they told us they have a shortage for you guys (the current fifths). Big time.
Basically they are just quieting you guys down at the moment. Look there may be some slots here and there in the states for me now, but nothing stable to keep up a normal full time status between traveling and what not. anywho, im sure some other person in the next month will have a slot 'magically' open. Or maybe not.

THERE IS NO TRANSPARENCY. They dont SHOW us whats available, its all hush hush CIA-ish.

Im sure they sit there and do the paperwork in such a way to which makes THEIR life in the office simple and feasible. Why would i search for those random slots right now when I CAN JUST STICK THIS PERSON IN THE UK.

My class has 90 plus students to be placed before YOU all are. Again, good luck.

- How exactly is the school supposed to get the local police in a foreign corrupt nation to do what they say, it sxm police's actions are not the responsibility of the school. I am a resident at a major university medical center that is in a rough neighborhood, we have our own university police, robbieries are still common.

Unless sxm has changed much from when I was there , the locals are lazy and poor, its a cultural aspect of living abroad that AUC can change.

If you were threatened by fellow students, AUC should have responded. I'll let you in on a secret, minorities have to crap from stupid people ( I have first hand experience with this, physicall abuse, etc.) It sucks, sorry. It sounds more like sour grapes over not getting more time to study though.

No knowledge of this, cant comment, but did they disrespect you?

ICM seemed this way to me also, and my grade was pulled out of thin air. But what I learned I use in clinical practice daily.

Really? They didnt teach you anything that helps on USMLE, weird.

Dont they pass everyone who gets above 75% ?

I never had an issue with clinicals, but things may have changed. ( i did stay in ny for all back to back cores, but this may have changed)

Bottom Line : I had sub par MCATs coming out of college, now I am a doctor. I got to live on an amazing island and then in NYC during my education. I have a beautiful home, a fancy bmw, and the best job in the world.
