I used magic jack and it worked.

Skype & Google Talk are also another possibilities.

GTalk was free this year which worked out great for calls, but that ends at the end of the year. Otherwise, I just plan video chats on Skype or GChat.

As long as the internet is working I use skype, otherwise, my parents call me on my phone as it is free for me (and all of us) to get incoming calls.

I have been living here and all those options are great and really inexpensive but for a little more any of the VoIP (Vonage, Teleblend) are great. The best part is you have a US phone # and your computer does not have to be on.

Absolutely...bring the VoIP box anywhere and plug it into your router...as long as you have high speed internet you are good to go...same phone #. Like I said it is a US phone # and your computer does not have to be on...

You will need an upcoming 2nd who lived in the dorms and tried it to answer as things change.

You can use it anywhere else and since you can only be in the dorms 1st semester you will be able to use it the rest of the time regardless. That being said Skype is cheaper and I prefer the ability to tune out the real world if need compared to an always on phone #, but thats me. Cant beat $3/month if you dont need a real phone # (like $6/month if you do and get all the deals).

vonage can be used on the island. however, you have to order the service and box while you're still in the US. once you're in possession of the vonage box you can use it anywhere in the world. i currently use it to call my friends and family back in the US. however, while it's not as portable as a magic jack i like it better. you can also get a skype phone number (it's just like a regular US number) and call all phones back in the US. it's service is a little cheaper than either magic jack or voange, but you're tethered to a computer using a headset.
