When are you allowed to take step three. I heard as an IMG you can't take it till your third year of residency. Are there any pros or cons to this, or does it mean nothing?
10529 points it depends on the state that sponsors you (this does not need to be the state you are doing residency, or even the one you live in!)...very few will allow a grade to take it without any pgy training (ie just with an MD)--conn is one that is popular. Other allow for it to be take with a pgy 1 year under your belt, many after 2 yrs and some you need to be in the 3rd yr (or have signed a contract for a 3rd yr)...some states have differing rules for IMGs, DOs, and AMGs.
if you are interested in taking it before the 3rd yr, look on the FSMB website and see which states will let you take it early.

there are multiple states that will let you take it before starting residency. go to FSMB to find out which ones do not require post graduate training before taking step 3. I recommend anyone who asks if they should take it before starting residency to do so. in my opinion residency does not prepare you for it. you still need to study and you will see that whatever time off you have is best used on other pursuits like sleep. try to get it done before starting
