Rochester General off the Clinical list

So I was wondering around AUC site and realized RGH was taken off their affiliated hospital list. I noticed this because I am from Rochester and was hoping to come back home and do most of my clinical rotations there. I emailed someone at AUC and they told me, "Yes," they have been taken off the list but that I could still do my elective rotations (30 weeks) there.

I guess I am fine with that but I wonder why it was taken off? He said that they just didn't renew their contract with them and acted like it wasn't that big of a deal. You think for a caribbean school they would want as many US affiliated hospitals as possible, especially since I believe RGH is one of the better cardiac hospitals in the country.

Also, I am a bit confused of what clinical rotations entails. To me elective means, well elective. How many electives do we have to do?- 30 weeks? I also know that I should do my last rotations at where I want to obtain a residency. Can that still happen in Rochester for me now that they are "out" as a core rotation possibility? Thanks for the feedback!

who knows why it was taken off.....maybe auc wouldn't pay them what they wanted or maybe no one was going there so they didn't want to maintain the relationship for a minimal number of students

you can only do cores at an AUC place....so if they will let you do all your electives there, then great.....they will be able to get to know you.

we have our core schedule of 50 weeks when you include our "required" electives of neuro and FP......so you need 22 weeks of electives

I wonder if AUC realizes ~120 students are leaving the island in april and will be starting clinicals this summer/fall....I wonder where all these core rotation spots will magically appear for the current 5th semester class.

You have to take into consideration that a big class of 100+ is just finishing their core rotations as you're looking to start. You know if the clinical situation was a horrible mess, people would be here in masses complaining about it.

You can get everything done in the US. Getting peds scheduled will be difficult when you first start clinicals, so AUC will suggest that you go to the UK. Don't bother. When it gets closer for you to graduate, AUC will bump the junior students and give you a US peds spot. Unless you want to go into peds, there is nothing to worry about.

I guess your best bet would be to go to the UK and get the core done with. Schedule a peds sub-I and elective in the US so you can get US peds experience as well as US LORs. This may entail doing some cores in 4th year. But you need those LORs before you apply in September.

Being in a May class, you have the inside track at the full core locations if you don't mind doing an elective or two first. (All providing one makes it out in 5 semesters) That might be your best bet to get peds in the US in your 3rd year.
