Thread: Quality of education textbooks, instructors etc. and readyne

Can current, and past students comment on the quality fo the education at AUC. Is it comparable to med school in the USA, of so or if not, why or what are the diferences. Does it provide the means to do well on USMLE?

Any info related to the first 2 years will be great.

How you do on the USMLE depends mostly on how hard YOU work, and how efficient you are at studying. The means are there. It amazes me that the people who complain most about the professors being bad are the people who never go to class. The people that complain about the school being bad are those who didn't do well. Since I am a first semester, I can only comment on Biochem, Biostats, and Anatomy. I have friends in med schools in the US and know the way classes are taught there. Anatomy, in my opinion is more difficult here at AUC than in the US. In some med schools in US for example, they have multiple choice practical exams, so you don;t have to know write the entire name of the structure you are looking at. A radiology resident would usually do a review on X-rays, MRI's, and CT's and would try to do it in the absence of the anatomy proffessors, and tells the students exactly what X-rays and MRI's would be on the exam. Biochemistry is about the same level of difficulty. Biostats in some med schools in the US is taught by MD's (during I think Hx and Px class [which is during the first year-extends through second year]) and MD's can't really explain statistics that well, whereas at AUC it is much more thorough separate subject; though you learn it in Japanese. So, thats that.

i know people that left here and tore the usmle with 230, 240's or 250's and then i know of people that left here and have failed the boards twice. it all depends on you. we are not talking about who has the highest grades either. you must learn the material for yourself in such a way that you are not memorizing and that you can bring it back up when its time to study for the boards. i dont have any way to compare it to other med schools, but i believe auc has a good system to test you if you know the material. after a student passes anatomy in the first semester, the school gives you the anatomy shelf exam, which is like a mock mini usmle subject test. you get a score back for that and you can see how yoy would do on the usmle in that subject. after your second semester, you take the histology shelf exam. then, in your fifth semester you take all the other shelfs. included in those is the comprehensive shelf, which is like a mock usmle test. on top of that, you take the comprehensive kaplan diagnostic test, both in the beginning of your fifth semester and at the end to compare scores and see if there is any improvement with the kaplan review course. i am in fourth semester so i dont know all the details about fifth but i cant wait. all in all, it all depends on you and most importantly on how you learn the material. there is a difference between learning it to honor an exam and learning it to recall it months later. ask several people in my class now, that got higher grades than me in anatomy, to tell you where a specific artery in the body is... they cant tell you. anyways... what you put into it is what you get from it.
