How long does it take to get your loan refund check after classes start

    Advertisements

Was wondering how long it takes to get your loan refund check after class starts, in addition, once you have your check, how do you deposit it? (by which i mean, do most people deposit in a local bank, or do they send it back home)

How much money did you guys bring when you initially came to the island for 1st semester? I will probably have about $1000 after my plane ticket, I was wondering if this will be enough to be get by on until my loan check comes.

    Thanks for the help everyone!

my experience: i received check the first day of orientation—sent it via fedex to my bank in the u.s. and it was received the next day. fedex had representation at the school that day and was able to take my check right then and there.

I only had a few hundred in cash on me when i arrived because I knew I could access my bank account via atm once i got here.

Assuming that you have all your paperwork in on time, you should receive your financial aid check at Registration. During registration, there are several "stations" set up for the students - one for health insurance, one for class registration, one for financial aid, etc... I believe that you get your check after you have proven health insurance coverage and registered for classes.

There are two options for receiving your check:

    1) American Check
    2) St. Maarten Check

If I were you, I would email financial aid and make sure that they are dispensing your funds as an American Check. This way, some of your funds will be available right when you deposit the check. I believe that most banks give you access to $1000 right away, and then access to the full amount the following day (though some banks may be different).

If you happen to mail home a St. Maarten check to the US (I did this once), the bank will usually put a hold on all the funds for 10-14 days to approve the transaction. This is really inconvenient if you are needing to pay rent or buy groceries!

After you pick up your checks and fill out some more paperwork, you simply walk over to the Fed-Ex representative in the Rotunda. They will give you the proper paperwork and help you correctly mail them home. The total cost is $35-$50, and most times my check arrives the next day.

    Hope this helps.

Get your paperwork done early and it is here when you start classes. Ask for most in a US check and the rest 2-3K in a local check so you can run off cash for awhile.
