Digital Voice Recorder

I am considering purchasing a recorder to bring to lectures...I found this useful in my undergrad Biochem class, because my teacher was a bad speaker...very monotonous. Many students in that class used them, we would walk in, place the recorder on the prof's desk and then find a seat.

Do most/all professors allow the use of recorders in their lectures?
Do many people use them?
Anyone recommend a particular brand/model?

Thanks for your input.

Most profs allow them, but very few people use them. Re-listening to a lecture is typically an enormous waste of time.

Recordings so far have been helpful for this one physio guy. His notes on EKG physio are crap, so his recordings are useful in order to listen + read through the notes together. Especially since he talks kinda fast in class that you can't understand all the main concepts.

But normally, recording lectures would be kinda pointless since a lot of times they either repeat the notes or talk about random ancedotes.

I would recommend a digital microphone as you can save each lecture electronically and review them at your leisure. I did it for pathology and immunology class. It was also good to know someone else who does it in the event you miss a class.

Unless you can quickly right down the time of something you want to go back to, really it's a waste of time. Besides you don't want to hear these cats talk twice, especially not when you're at home.

Although I don't support recording in the first place, you can just record with your computer and Microsoft Office. Most of the people in my class who did record just did it that way. If you type notes while recording, it will time stamp the recordings to the notes, so you can just click the notes you want to hear, and it will play back the relevant portion.

If this is the same physio prof back in my days before colored television came out.. then yup. Voice recorder will help, or better yet. Find a transcribed copy from someone.
