Hows the Food on the Island?

Just wondering about the Protein situation on the island. Is the price of beef comparable to that in the States. Needed one more post to send ppl messages. But I do like my red meat and will need to prepare myself if I cant get it or its to expensive.

Everything costs more on an island... I think cheap beef is in the neighborhood of $4/lb. I know there are MANY different cuts of meat, I'd usually just choose the cheapest beef. I mostly ate frozen chicken... it's a lot cheaper and I trust it more than the fresh stuff on the island. If you're talking about protein supplements, bring a 10lb sack of your favorite stuff cuz odds are they won't have that brand/flavor on the island. If they do, it'll cost you a lot more than you're used to.

The meat is not nearly as good or as cheap, but it's available in most cuts and edible. Chicken is the same way...not as good, more expensive, but available. I eat an awful lot of meat though and I'm not a huge fan of most vegetables, and I've managed to make it 5 semesters on the island.

Oh my, some of the best meat I've had was on the island (specifically the French side: Grande Case). You'll probably find it more cost-effective to eat meat than vegetables on the island.

Grand Marche sells green bell peppers for Naf4.99/kg. The orange, red, or yellow ones will cost you Naf24.99/kg, though.

    This place is weird.

I didn't buy too much red meat on the island, but there are plenty plenty of great places to eat on St. Martin....that and the beach are what I miss most about the island!! Anyway, fish is actually cheaper than in the states. You can get fresh snapper, grouper, king fish, etc of great quality and reasonable price right in the grocery stores. Fish is also not too pricey if you eat out at restaurants also. Red meat is good too, but pricer, but hey, you're in the islands, enjoy the fresh fish!

The prices are comparable to major cities around the world. If you have ever been to Europe, the prices on the island will not scare you.

Ground beef at Food Express is $2.99/kg... you can sometimes find good prices on Ribeyes... (all relative).

If you want a protein binge, there are several places on the island to get ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT ribs for like $12. Granted, these ribs won't be the same kind you are used to in the states (quite a bit chewier), but they will provide you with a good dose of protein.
