Thread: got caribserve equip. already, but contract?

Hey guys,

the previous tenants left their caribserve equipment at the apt., so all that's left to be done is to go to the mailbox in simpson bay
to sign a contract and pay the reconnection fee right?

is there any other way to speed up the process? is there a caribserve office near campus?

nope...the office is in phillipsburg (near the roundabout at the end of the front st area). it is very difficult to find if u don't know what to look for.

the office is on the 4th or 5th floor of a building that's located on the hillside. u take a steep, unmarked, driveway up and behind the building to get to it(it's not even near the building). unless u call to get exact directions and u take someone who knows the area with u, i wouldn't suggest that u go.

Caribserve is the main internet provider down on the island. If you are living on campus, you won't have to worry about that your first semester since you get Netstar (about which there have been numerous complaints). If you are living off campus, most people use Caribserve. You can go to the Mailbox down in Simpson Bay to sign up (you don't need to go into Phillipsburg). Last I checked they required a $300 startup fee, of which $150 is (supposedly) refundable; then the dsl packages range from $63/month and up depending on the speed. If you keep an eye out, some upper semesters will be selling their equipment, in which case I guess you would only pay $150 to startup (could be wrong on that). There is another company, Telnet, which is around the same price as Caribserve, but I've heard is not as reliable. Hope this helps.

Or you can go to the French Side Office where I work at. I will take care of you guys. there is a map on the caribserve website for directions.

For all the new people coming to school, I would definitely take this advice because you're going to have all of the complications with getting internet alleviated. Might as well go where you know you'll get this taken care of CORRECTLY the first time!!

I got an antenna from a friend before he left the island. I'm set to have caribserve come next week to install the antenna and activate the service. They deducted the price of the antenna from the installation and are only charging my $50 for the installation.

The question I had was that the antenna came with no cables. The ethernet cable is still there from the previous connection at the apartment, but I don't see a power cable for the antenna itself. As for the antenna, does it need its own power supply? Also, does the ethernet cable plug directly into the computer (or router) or do you need a modem also?

There is a power supply: a wall-plug ac converter with one line out--a dual-headed, female and male RJ45 connection. The male terminal goes to your computer or router and the other goes to the antenna... you can take the bottom of the antenna unit off and you'll get an a clear picture of how it gets power etc.

I think I mentioned this to you already but incase I didn't... they charged me $50 for activation and another $50 for dude to come out and install it.
