Unlike the OP's situation, we're not that close to the break and kinda close to block and would love to get back to using the computer. Unfortunately I wasn't even planning on going back home for break. Does anyone have any experience with this mac repair place in Simpson's Bay? My computer is about a year and a half old and I have a ton of time left on my warranty. Do you think it's worth checking out the guy in SB or would I be better off mailing it both ways back to the US.

Unfortunately my computer IQ is fairly limited, but to me it sounds kind of like a power supply problem? How complex is the repair process for this? Would it be something I could get repaired on SXM? Thoughts?

Thanks!
Could be a HD problem. You can try the guy in SB since he's apparently an apple authorized repair person. But, I've heard that he may use non-apple parts and void your warranty. However, only ever heard that as third hand information, so it may not be true. Getting it to the US is the best option, but probably expensive.

Sounds like a typical Mac problem... in addition to paying so much for the hardware it always ends up being shotty whether its the dvd-rom or this case where its most likely the heatsink has come loose from the cpu. Usually that is the most common reason for random shutdowns in all comps

My advice is to ditch the mac and get a pc, that way any hardware related problems can be solved no matter where you are in the world due to the abundance of parts and ease of of replacement. Get a Mac after you start earning money so you can throw them away when they start acting shotty as they commonly do.

As far as fixing it, I havent opened a unibody, but I have opened the older version of MBP's before- I could re seat the heatsink... but not until after blocks.

Right...exactly. That's why macs are number one in service and support, not to mention customer satisfaction...because they break so often and are so difficult to have fixed. Most people who buy macs don't take them to SXM, so on the rare occasion that they do have issues, they're typically very easy to have repaired...usually much easier and cheaper than any PC. My advice would be to keep your computer away from this guy, who will void the warranty and likely have no idea how to fix it. I really don't know where you come up with all this nonsense that you spew all over the fora.

I'm going to play devils advocate, and say drpeppir was probably talking about user serviceability, which in my limited experience, is easier on PC laptops than Apple laptops.

I can't comment on US or SXM apple customer support, but PCs are well-serviced around here by MVG tech, who have it done in about a week.

I will personally stay out of the Mac vs. PC debate as I always have... I just know that traditionally I have had good experiences with both, and now bad experiences with both. This just happens to hit where it hurts considering I don't have easy access to the luxuries of being back in the US. This is truly when I miss it the most... computer-related stuff... internet, etc.

Thanks for your suggestions and offers, guys, but I think I'll go talk to the guy in Simpson Bay one of these days and see what he has to say. Does anyone have any experience working with him? I wonder if I request he stick to using Apple parts, is he the kind of guy who might oblige or am I going to have trouble with that? I suppose I wouldn't be against paying for Apple shipping parts down here if they'd do that... guess I'd have to talk to him about it.

Alternately, if I were to do a whole shipment out and back thing, what would be the best way? I was thinking FedExing it out, having it fixed and sent to a relative who would then proceed to send it back to me via 4-Star... does that seem reasonable or should I avoid 4-Star for shipping a computer?

Shipping it back to the island is not a big deal. It's shipping it back that's a problem. You should theoretically be OK using the guy in simpson bay, since he's an apple certified tech. Like I said, I haven't heard anything other than from a person who knew a person, and that was years ago.

Yes, PCs are usually easier to service on your own. However, the vast majority of people should not be opening up their laptops and attempting repairs. Itempest has admitted that he is among that majority. So, for those people (most people), the compromise of a better computer, while sacrificing a little user-servicabilty, is well worth it. And, when you do have the rare problems, Apple is, by far, #1 in support.

Hmm, is anyone familiar with this place? Virtual Technology - Authorized Apple Service Provider - St. Maarten Netherlands Antilles

Seems like a fairly professionally-designed site with lofty claims of respecting the Apple warranty, using only Apple parts, etc. etc.

This seems like the obvious question that no one has asked, but have you attempted any troubleshooting yet?

Troubleshooting a MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro that won't turn on

First thing I'd do is check the battery. Possible that your adapter is toast and you're trying to boot off of reserve battery. Could also be an SMC issue or a kernel panic, though the latter would give you some text. Go through that list and if you're still having problems, I can try to look at it for you. No promises I could do much with it before block, though.

I don't know of many CPUs that are going to shut down on you after five seconds for an overheat. Even a poorly seated heatsink would last longer than that; this sounds like a power issue.

HD also seems unlikely as OS X is at least kind enough to give you an icon instead of an antiquated, cryptic error code.
