The reality about AUC faculty.
Our members don't see this ad.
Once again a faculty member has helped me out. This time was with a suitcase to get my belongings home after a successful first two years of medical school. The faculty at AUC has been amazing over the last two years and this includes Dr. Y, who takes a personal interest in helping and encouraging each and every student to the point of keeping up with sometimes complex situations in her memory without having to refer to their file. Dr. Y listens objectively to ALL students regardless of their academic standing or prior experience and will make sure that everything is fair and just even if it means upsetting the faculty that she supervises. Dr. Y is what a Dean should be. I appreciate all that Dr. Y has done for me more than I can express in words. All of the Dr. Gs (4 of them) that I have worked with have also been amazing and have contributed significantly to my medical education in a way that I will remember until I meet my maker. This includes the Dr. G who is not with us anymore. I was in his last class. There are always rumors in any school and some people have been a bit harsh on the professors at AUC. I think this may be due to their frustration with their own shortcomings and are knee jerk reactions after a poor performance on their exams. I have not spread any rumors, but I speak from experience about some feelings brought on by my own shortcomings and poor performance during my first two semesters at AUC. Like parents, there is no such thing as a "perfect" professor or parent. The one thing that makes an exceptional professor or parent is the fact that they care about their students or children and what they are teaching and encourage them regardless of the situation. I am a parent and I was a teacher for a very short part of my career before I came to AUC. There are many similarities with being a parent and being a teacher. Caring is the critical ingredient for success. After attending AUC for two years, I am glad that I did not make it into a US school. I have had more english speaking professors than any of the US schools that I have ever attended. (4 Universities b/c I was in the Navy). The quality of education that was provided by the AUC professors exceeds all expectations that I had before I came to St. Maarten. The only thing that might have fallen short was the library. If you are a student considering medical school in the Caribbean, you will not find a better medical school than AUC. I was also accepted to St. Georges and I chose AUC. I want to say a special thank you to Dr. B and Dr. E for believing in me and giving me a second chance. I will work hard in the coming years to make all of my professors and family proud of me so they know that their efforts have made a real difference. Dr. P is not at AUC anymore, but she was the most enthusiastic (better than a cheerleader) and caring professors that I have ever encountered. She is missed by all of her students. There are many things that I will not miss about St. Maarten like the unreliable water, electricity, and internet, but I will truly miss the professors that have worked hard to help me succeed. Thank You......Doctor Monkey |
