Why crime on the islands will only go up
Dismantling the Antilles...
(I could stop there) Gas Prices going up = less boats visiting the island... which leads to less tourists to absorb crime, as well as less jobs around boat catering businesses. Less jobs means more time for people too look at your stuff and figure out a way to take it. Power and water Prices going up: the owner of GEBE has already been confronted by many disgruntled islanders, according the The Daily Herald. Airlines are getting more expensive. As tourism goes down, and as a result so does the economy and As the division of wealth rises = more crime. The strong ties with the US economy, including the fact that SXM has decided to make the US dollar the official currency after their independence (and basically has done so already). As the US dollar decreases in value on its current trend, the cost of living for the average islander will go up, and they'll figure out ways to keep their standard of living up. The property values have not fallen as expected by many of the islanders. But, the high property values just look like a big neon dollar sign to would be thieves and other criminals. On the bright side there is more tourism here than other islands and the direct jet blue flight from New York can only help. Maybe people will be more selective when choosing a place to travel and they'll choose SXM, because its cheap to get to. The mega Yachts will probably be more scarce and the less traveled to islands will take a major hit in their economies. So, it'll get worse here but not as bad as the islands that many other schools are located on. This is not intended to make the school look bad, I would much rather be here than anywhere else.. But, there is no point in diluting ourselves about our safety. Just like anywhere else the island has safe areas and dangerous areas. It would be detrimental to think this place is as safe as disneyland (which incidentally actually has alot of crime). |

With independence, crime probably will rise on SXM... The better question to ask is simply how will the island sustain life with a new high rise seemingly being built every minute. The roads certainly are not adequate for an increased population size. Nor is the water supply and electric grid. Imagine how many times the Cupecoy power will be shut down a few years from now as energy demand just continues to skyrocket.

I have been robbed, I lost thousands of dollars worth of my stuff on this island. So, I am speaking from experience... and honestly, if i had know that this sort of thing happens all of the time, it probably would have saved me a lot.
So thanks for whining and assuming things because I don't agree with your viewpoint. and as for the US dollar value a slight revival does not equate to a positive trend. Maybe you've seen the words economic crisis flash across your screen when watching the daily show, which is probably what made you think you were an economist. |
