Night of Terror: Tradewinds: Thursday 3:15 a.m. 9/25/08

So I was sleeping at my apartment in Tradewinds and awoke to a noise of someone screaming for their life... Screaming stopped a few minutes later... I was terrified... A few minutes after that the female was screaming "bloody, bloody murder." Bl--ooo--ddddyyy Muuuurrrrddder....The most frantic, dreadful, and traumatizing screams I've ever heard (like someone burning alive)... I was frightened so I went out to the kitchen and grabbed my long steak knife, and by that time all of tradewinds was up trying to get to her aid, just as the sickened criminal got away....Luckily, I guess the girl was alright... It originally sounded like she layed there bleeding and dieing after a long struggle... Nothing worse than someone preying on the innocent as they sleep....

As for other crimes on the island lately, we all know about the two people that were robbed at gunpoint after being stopped while driving.. There was also a female with her family at Cay Hill that was shotup for no reason by dudes with full body tatoos... I also read about a guy that was shot 5 times at the bar (3 times in the back while trying to get away), and another guy got shot in the face while dining at Hercules in Marigot... This all happened in the last two weeks or so...One more thing, one of U.S. most wanted fugitives was just arrested at a guest house here after getting a tip.... Can't wait to get off the island and go where it's safer.....

And just remember, if you dial 911 to get the Dutch "police" and they don't answer or you get put on hold, there are 2 other numbers to try calling!! We don't even have 3 "911" type numbers in the states..

Come on Guys, this is going a bit too far. Please do not think all local people are bad or "animals", only a minority out of 70 000 people is giving us trouble and there is the same problem in the US! I really feel offended being treated this way. Not only AUC students are robbed and being attacked, local people who are working hard (Yes SOME DO, even if it's hard to beleive) and trying to live peacefully on this island, are also suffering from it. I used to never lock my house or my car, I was able to walk anywhere, anytime of the day or night and never had a problem whatsoever. That was few years ago. Sint Maarten had changed a lot and unfortunately not in a really good way. Now I feel also upset and angry about all this. It is ruining everybody's daily life, I put iron gates and big locks on every doors and windows, got bad-looking and noisy (but adorable) dogs, and yes I carry a weapon with me (i always have a knife on me that i use it on a daily basis for work and a baseball bat behind the driver seat...just...in...case!). there is nothing to be scared of in SXM, just act responsibly. Going to the very local areas at night has never been a smartest idea...ever. I just hope to change your opinion about us, sint maarteners. I am often hanging out with few of MED students, and I are really enjoying our friendship!

I don't think you understand. This criminal came into this girl's apartment by climbing through a ladder to her balcony in spite of the fact that her lights were on, knowing that there's a person inside! She woke up staring at his face holding her laptop which was laying next to her on bed.

Even if she had a pepper spray, I doubt she would have had the time to even use it at the face of danger.

Clearly this is a traumatic experience. The fact that you can't even feel safety in your own home, let alone going out to some local areas late at night. I bet this girl can't even look at her apartment at this point.

    911 Operator

Good morning. Yesterday, I spoke to my friend Pat who is a 911 operator here on St. Maarten and is very dedicated to his job. Pat told me that all 911 calls will receive an immediate response with an overwhelming and brutal response with respect to criminals. He also told me that we are all idiots for thinking there is a crime problem in St. Maarten. With a face like his, I can't help but trust what he says.
