Maping out the journey-If you started in Jan
Hi All
Hi All I have a question that i know many of my classmates have as well.I started in Jan and i know that there is a very small window to make the 2011 match.I received advice about the jobs out there for M.D.s but my first priority would be to get on with the program and start residency right away. Now,as i see it,i can finish M.D.basic science by Aug 2009.If i take 6 weeks to study for the Step1 and write it in Oct(hopefully my prep during Med5 would be good enuf to take lesser time for step1). I heard that rules have changed and we cant start any rotations untilw e get our step1 score in(ppl used to do psych rotations in the 3 weeks before??).So assuming i start in Nov2009,and 72 weeks of rotation are 1 yr,4 months and 19 days...id finish (theoratically) by end of march 2011).Obviously this is unrealistic,we have to write step2,prepare for applications, take some time between some of our rotations... My second question ig uess would be,can we apply for residency before completing all our rotations?Whats the deal with prematch.Iknow what it is,but specific rules about it.Does it make a difference if you are Canadian?(i know that if you go thru the match, you have to wait for ur visa before u can start ur residency...how does it differ if u prematched....) Also, how much time do you need for step2? The news about being not able to do any rotations in the 3 weeks while you wait for ur step1 result, how accurate is that? Whens the deadline for match applications and when do ppl start residencies?? ANY advice from Faculty and studetns who are in clincals or residency would be greatly appreciated.i know its a lot of question, but i really want to map this out right...thanks |

It is possible that you'll make the 2011 match, but not likely. You definitely will not have 6 weeks after you finish basic sciences to study for the step. If you wanna match in 2011, you have to be done studying and ready to take the step as soon as you leave the island (most people are not). Also, you are probably going to have to be very flexible with your rotation sites, since you won't have any time to take a break in between, or wait for a spot you want. Since the May and August class will already be in clinicals, you'll have to take whatever spots are left.
If you don't rush things, you can take more time to study, have a little time to rest between rotations, and wait to get the rotations you want and schedule the electives you want. Also, with the new curriculum, you're going to still have classes the first half of 5th semester, so you don't have the whole semester to study anymore. Keep in mind that if you rush to take the step and wind up just barely passing, that's the score you're stuck with. And, unless you want family practice, that could be a problem.

not likely....you will need to take the step shortly after leaving the island, not 6 weeks after. you must have scores in hand before you can get scheduled for clinicals. also don't forget the time it takes to find a place to live/get settled. also, based on the start dates for cores we were given from ocsa, there aren't as many for people finishing in aug. so what that means is that you will most likely be in NY or the UK which might be best for TRYING to make the 2011 match.
like slevit said you guys will have classes in 5th semester to worry about. but just to clarify, 5th semester as it is now is not just a big study-fest. you are quite busy with icm. as an independent applicant you can prematch if the program accepts prematches. some do, some dont. residency generally starts july 15 i think. so basically it probably isn't going to happen......the biggest problem i can see would be just barely missing the 2011 match. then what do you do when your loans go into repayment? as a fellow january class person, i feel your pain but look on the bright side. im going to have time to prep for step 1 how i want, flexibility in cores and electives, and maybe some time off in between killer rotations! good luck to you
