Place to buy cheap unlocked phone for chippie [on the island]

Hey,

My phone stopped working and was wondering if there's a closer place than chippie to pick up a replacement. Thanks in advance

You can go and haggle with the Indian guy on Back street over a phone.

Chippie is a SIM card, nothing more. You can use chippie in any unlocked phone.

Thanks. Does anyone know the band frequencies used on the island? I'm getting a triband phone that covers 900/1800/1900 Mhz and was wondering if it would work.. I know the iphone's a quad band that covers 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz and just wanted to make sure the island doesnt use 850, thanks in advance

-edit: Found the answer I was looking for: GSM-850 and GSM-1900 are used in the United States, Canada, and many other countries in the Americas.- So a 850mzh phone will work here and in the US, fyi

I would just get a quad so you can use it pretty much anywhere afterwards.

The cheap phones here might not work in North America.

get an iphone, because of the wifi you can use at school too. You can even get free data from the cell service on the island. Do a search to find the details. Just don't get it stolen by flashing it around the island every 30 secs.

Plus when you get back to the US, you can use it in clinicals. After June 9th, there will be an explosion of programs for the iphone. Epocrates is coming to the iphone too. Its a real good all around phone/pda for clinicals.

SDK is not until the end of June, but close enough...

WWDC is June 9th, and unless I am mistaken apple will unveil their iPhone 2.0 firmware which will allow an applicaiton store on their phone. This will allow you to download apps to the phone without having to jailbreak it. The SDK has been around for a few months now.

Im pretty sure its gonna be June 9th, but maybe I misheard.

You misheard. The new phone is rumored to be released June 9th at WWDC, but the new firmware is not due until the end of June. However, you never know what Jobs has up his sleeves. He could release it early.

The SDK is available now, but useless to just about everyone that's not a developer. Only a very small number of people have access to the beta of 2.0.
