Kayaking on the island

I've seen numerous posts about kayaking and was wondering what the best solution for it was. Do most of you kayakers rent equipment? If so, what's the best spot? For those who own the equipment, where's a good place for that? Thanks in advance,

BLinus

It depends on what kind of kayaking you want to do. AUC does have a kayak team, that is a semi-competitive team that uses ocean-going racing kayaks called surf-skis. They are narrow, unstable, and require some committment to master (weeks-months). I'm currently working toward a 26 km race in September from St. Barts to St. Martin. Others on the team just come out on a regular basis and do shorter paddles. If you're interested in this kind of kayaking, PM me, and we can set up a time for you to go try out the boats.

If you're interested in doing some basic touring, we have a couple of touring kayaks (almost untippable), called Scuppers. We don't use them that often, and they're stored in a couple of places on the island.

My recommendation, if you want to do some touring, is to contact Tri Sport (sporting goods store in Simpson Bay, across from MacDonalds). They rent stable touring kayaks, both singles and doubles. You can rent kayaks at a lot of the resorts and beaches on the island, so they're pretty easy to find.

As for purchasing equipment, talk to Tri Sport. It would be expensive, though. And you would need a place to store it, and transport it.

I used to kayak when I lived out in Beacon Hill. The kayak was stored on the beach side of the house. It was fun to Kayak out in the ocean.
