Apology was published today in the letters to the editor. Hopefully, as many people as were interested in the original article will be interested in the apology!

Having dealt with the locals for the past couple of days I've noticed NO change in their attitude towards me or other students. If they were island friendly before they're island friendly now, if they were island grumps before they're island grumps now.
I'm sure if they are literate, then they are smart enough to realize that it was only an opinion (true as it may be). The illiterates don't know anything about the published opinion.
My bet is that a few students are more upset about this than the locals are, and the fact that slevit wrote the piece just adds fuel.

Blogs even in the US are becoming more and more notable for being "newsworthy." Whether it's tabloid, threats, etc. Which goes to show you that you should take responsibility for what you put up on the internet (ValueMD is no exception as well). So Slevit did the responsible thing imho, with the apology and kudos to him.

As for your blog, it is almost fantasy writing because I am right here with you and you could not be more wrong sometimes. The difference is that I like this place and I like the people and unfortunately all white people look the same to them.

This is not the US so act like an adult and adapt until you finish up your last 3 semesters.
The island is doing exactly to the students what we are doing to Slevit, just looking for a reason to start some beef over. Yeah he says some stuff that we all think it really stupid and this is yet another reason to chastise him publicly , just like the island is trying to do to the students. Your right we should just sit here and continually be thankful for their neglect and ability to rationalize subquality business practices and ignorance as "island life". I think everyone is right we should stop complaining about the island and accept it as it is, because its just their way of life. We should accept things like selling people defective products and refusing to make it right. We should accept the police failing to do anything but ticket our cars and set up traps to nail students without proper insurance when there are much more important things for them to do. We should accept occurance like land lords and bouncer pulling guns on students. I think that what was said was way to far, but lets be honest the island does not like us. I don't think that justifing away the improvement of a country (that I still do see a lot of good in) by rationalizing any effort at improvement as against the island way of life is right. I would be happy if I saw more islanders taking a little more effort into bettering themselves and not just telling us tough pooh pooh this is not the US. Just like the majority of students here have to man up and say that they have made mistakes in the past leading them outside of the US to medical school and slevit (I am sure painfully and to the degredation of his ego) had to man up writting that letter, the Island and students need to stop making excuses for the way things are and try to work on solutions (not allow people to rationalize what can and can not be done). If everyone just said "Oh thats just the way it is" like everyone does here on the island, we would be in medical school learning how to stick leaches on some guys *** to cure his cold.
