what's the best way to transport a computer?

Our members don't see this ad.
what's the best way to transport a 22" lcd monitor and computer considering size, weight, and that they're fragile? (i don't like to study on my laptop because it's really noisy)

or do you recommend that I leave my lcd monitor and computer at home and buy a new one here?

unless you can pack the lcd in the original packaging and smother the box within a full suitcase of clothes.......... DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BRING IT. you will have loads of shot pixels.

however, as far as the cpu, i packed mine within a suitcase full of clothes and it made it to sxm and back 20 months later in one piece. if you dont have the original packaging for the lcd, buy a cheap monitor on the island when you get here........ or take captains advice and just buy a new laptop.

Buy a mac laptop and it won't make any noise at all.

Other than that, If you take the monitor to a UPS or FedEx store, they will package it for you and they can ship it. It will cost you a little, but they do an excellent packing job. I brought my 23", but I just packed it in my car and shipped that.

Don't forget 4 star cargo. Great cheap way to send things to the island.
They do it by boat. You main it to Miami and it shows up in St maarten about a week later. cheap too, much cheaper than airlines or fedex or such.

I bought a new laptop but I plan on bringing an external monitor along with some other fragile items...
I talked extensively with the local UPS store and they offer a "pack and promise" sort of deal; if you bring all the items to them and pay for them to pack it ~~25 bucks for packing a 65lb box AND you purchase the minimal insurance through them, they guarantee nothing will be damaged. The claim process if anything were to be damaged is expedited through UPS if they packed it. My plan is to ship a 60 lb box with to SXM through Florida and 4starcargo (UPS to miami, 4star to SXM). I will be putting books, computer speakers, external monitor, possibly printer and misc smaller items that I don't want to pack in checked baggage into this box and UPS does do an excellent job of protecting your stuff.
In is a more expensive route but I plan on paying 200-250 max in total to ship all my stuff from Los Angeles to SXM. I have easily saved that much in purchasing products here in the states via online vendors and that price is easily justifiable, in my mind, to have the extra comfort of using electronics I am happy with .

Regarding the original box for monitors - that also satisfies the pack and promise deal through UPS. You can bring them the monitor box and they will just ship that for you with their guarantee. I will be bringing my laptop on the plane with me , of course....

See ya guys in 1 MONTH!!

let me chime in: get a laptop. When you get back to the states, you can then buy yourself a nice new shiny desktop

Remember that study areas often change as the semesters progress. I had a few different areas where I studied on the island starting with my apartment, but ending up on campus all the time by fifth semester. Laptops provide versatility for moving around, especially when your internet goes down (a very common occurrence that can last multiple days) and you need to find a wifi place to log on and check email.
